Your path takes you through Dodge where there is a touristy re-creation of the old west with a few original elements IIRC. Boot Hill, jail, saloon, etc. Shootouts.

You'll also pass through Greensburg which got blown off the map by a twister a few years ago. Rebuilt with "green" in mind. They also have the largest hand-dug well, which I have not seen.

Also, note the scale of the irrigation systems through those high & dry plains. When your kids pass through some day, the Ogallah Acquifer will no longer support it, but it sure grows crops while it lasts.

If you modify your track to angle up to Hutchinson, they have a really impressive Cosmosphere and Space Center with a SR71 Blackbird, lots of Apollo-era items, IMAX, etc. They also have tours at an underground salt mine that is real nice. If you don't need to come to Wichita, just continue east on US-50 over to I-35.

I'm no doubt slighting many worthy attractions, but those came to mind. Mostly, you need to enjoy seeing agriculture.

If you have any particular interests, that might jog my memory.

Not that you should miss Wichita...

Whatever you do, don't miss the Cosmosphere and Space Center. It is a real pleasant suprise out in the middle of the prairies. A first class museum. As soon as you walk in the entrance as see an actual SR-71hanging from the ceiling in the lobby, you know it's going to be good. Unfortunately the Salt Mine museum wasn't open yet when I went through ther 5 years ago, it sounded interesting too.

There is also a well known US Prairie park or preserve, I think east of there on US 50 that is worth a stop.

We went through there headed west and spent the night in Dodge City because the forcast was tornadoes near US 50 20-30 miles west of Dodge City right about where we had planned to spend the night. We saw on the news that one did run right across the highway there. That was May, July should be calmer.

July rain is very limited, but when we get it, just respect the storm cell.

I would suggest spending some time in the park and then drive over Trail Ridge Road to Granby. There is a visitor center at the top of the pass, and of course lots of places to hike and see. From Granby take Hwy. 34 south to I-70. After that you could backtrack to Mt. Evans if you like, although it might be anti-climatic after Trail Ridge Road.

Thanks again everyone for the tips and suggestions. I will definitely use your input. I will also be sure to post updates and pictures along the way.

First pic is the car unpacked with the empty cargo carrier attached. I am only using this carrier for the first leg of the journey (San Diego to Chicago). It will be packed light and only be holding around 100 max lbs.

Hello from the road. So far my Prius has handled the trip as perfect as I could have imagined. Although, I can't wait to get to Illinois so I can unload this packed vehicle and take the cargo rack off. I'm still getting just under 50 mpg so I can't complain too much.

I haven't seen a trailer hitch used as a rack before. Looks like it will cause a lot less drag than piling crap on your roof.

I got the idea from an old thread somewhere on PC. It is only a Curt Class I 1.25" hitch that are mostly used for bike racks. It has worked as good as I could have possibly asked for other than having to unload and load the camping gear and other stuff on and off at every stopping point. I tried to put my lightest items back there and not have too much weight in the back. I don't think it has caused much more drag. I think the weight of my passengers, luggage, camping gear, etc has caused my slight loss in MPG more than anything.

My leg from SD to Chicago includes my wife, 2 small kids and a dog in the hatch area so I am fully packed you could say. The family is flying back and just my wife and I are headed to the Florida and back portion of the trip. I actually won't need the cargo rack for the rest of the trip once I make it to Chicago.

I'm sitting here on break in my office daydreaming of doing something like this when I go on vacation. Uber cool that you are sharing your Prius travel experience with us! Keep the pics coming!

    Slick looking cargo rack btw!

My 1st leg is complete! I've made it to Chicago.

So far the car has handled it great. I will say that my MPG could be better but honestly I am not really trying to hyper-mile very much. I was doing much better before going over the mountains in Colorado and through Kansas and Missouri I was hauling *** where I could. I am also pushing the max 800 lb capacity and hurting my drag with the cargo carrier. 2 adults, 2 kids, dog, camping gear, suitcase and random stuff to fill the rest of the interior.

Next stop....Key Largo Florida (and of course everything in-between). First I gotta get all 10,000 of these dead bugs off my grill.

    Stay tuned.

Mom and Grandma are flying back with the kids. They are also staying with Grandparents in Chicago while we head to Florida.

The dog gets to come for the ride though. :p

Have you ever thought of putting the wheel covers back on to see if you could increase a little on the MPG during these long journeys? I'd be curious if it would have saved you a couple of bucks. Are the kids happy so far sitting in the back?

btw...I'm diggin the shot of the rainbow, looks like you and your family are having a good time! Stay safe!

I was actually thinking about it before we left and it kind of slipped my mind with all of the packing and other preparations I was making. I'm sure it would help a little but nothing too major. Although over the course of 7500+ miles it may have made a bit of a difference. I like the looks with them off too much and wanted to showcase the car to my family too.

The kids were great. This is the end of the tour for them as far as the road trip goes. My youngest is 10 months and he seriously sleeps 80% of the time he gets in a car. My daughter is 4 years old and I prepared about 100 different things/activities to keep her busy when she got bored in the car. She also likes her car sleep too. It worked out very well. As they get bigger, I might need to investigate trading in my Santa Fe for the upcoming bigger Prius for road trips.

Greetings from the road. I've had a long journey so far but everything has been awesome. The car has been great. I'm heading for Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Road next.

Anyone got any recommendations on how to remove bugs from my bumper? :D

I might just have to pay for a complete detailing when I get home. There was a bird stuck in the grill somewhere in South Dakota too.

When I got back from a 5000 mile trip (including the Yellowstone area), I had to run the car twice through the car wash to get the dirt out. Exterior detailing would be good to get the crap and bugs out of the paint. I think they sell some chemical that takes the bugs out at Walmart.

Just take it to the car wash where people not robots work. $7-$12 for an auto wash with hand pre-wash, hand-dry, and hand-pre-clean where they get all that out. Is it worth your time for what they can do in minutes?
