Has anyone tried using wget to gang-download the documents from the Toyota site? I haven't ever seen the organization of the Toyota site, but if the Prius docs are on one web page, or in a single directory, it would be straightforward to grab the lot with wget.

Here's the page to wget, for anyone interested:

It sounds like some of the tricky part is getting all the right URLs compiled so that adobe puts them all in the right place to end up with a nice document?

So I guess the question is "are the url's legal to distribute?"... I would think so.. they are public ... how else could the public download without the urls?... its not like they are top secret?... Because they have no information as to how to do anything with the prius.... and the possessor is still dependent upon having adobe and spending time loging on with a cost.

I know Toyota may like it more if you spend "days" accessing this info... they would make more money!... but aren't we talking about a way to save money by downloading them "quickly" and legally?

Why should the person with dialup pay more than the person with broadband? and why should the person with broadband pay more than the person who knows how to use abobe efficiently?

Yes, that is the only part that requires knowledge that the average person might not possess.

I've got a total of seven .html files that contain links to the PDF files. The other manual sections contained so few documents that I just downloaded them manually.

The seven files I created look like the following (using the repair manual as an example, 826 pages contained in approx 250 original PDF files):

    aaa
    aaa
    ...250 lines deleted
    aaa

It took me less than a minute to create each of these .html files, by first viewing the source of the frame on Toyota's site, then typing a few global substitution commands into my text editor (gvim) and deleting the stuff I didn't need.

Once you have these seven files, it's a simple matter of opening the .html file and clicking a few buttons in Acrobat web capture to download and append each section.

It's still copyrighted material, and only the copyright holder has the right to reproduce and distrbute. It would be hard to argue that "making it easier and faster to download every document off the site" would fall under fair use, but hey, I'm not a lawyer.

The business model of many web sites is based on preventing capture of the site, and forcing subscribers to maintain a paid subscription for access. If a large number of people find a way to circumvent their countermeasures, they'll plug the hole.

If a moderator states that it is ok to post the .html files in this forum, I will post them. That is the only way I will supply them, I will not respond to PMs requsting a copy. Sorry.

Imperfect information is one of the reasons people pay different prices for the exact same good.

And yes, this is ridiculously simple, if you understand HTML and can operate a text editor. I am phenomenally lazy, and will not undertake tasks (for free) that aren't "rediculously simple" [sic]. Exceptions would be anything my wife tells me to do.

I tried wget before I tried Acrobat. I was having trouble with the authentication to the site, even though I believe I got the command line arguments correct to pass the info along. It may be possible, but I gave up after five minutes. Beside, Acrobat will combine the documents into one, which will save you from having to reassemble the document from separate files.

Sorry to revive an ancient thread. Wanted to get a 2002 Prius Repair Manual and was wondering if this method will still work to download the whole thing. I know now they charge $15 and give you 2 days access.

Has anyone tried this recently and can tell me if they've update their security and what not to prevent it from being mass downloaded?

Very nice hack, by the way. :thumb:

I believe you will find that it no longer is possible to download large .pdf files from techinfo.toyota.com. When you select a topic, only a few pages will come up. Hence, with total content measured in the thousands of pages, it will take you a long time to retrieve the entire manual.

Darn, looks like they may have wised up.

Someone on another site also said that instead of pdf they now have the repair manual in fsm or some strange format that's difficult to download.

Do a search in this forum. Several of us posted links to an Italian site that posts full repair manuals in English.:D:D:D

Looks like these are for 2004 and 2006 models. Do you know if there is one for 2002 or at least first generation (2001-2003) available online for free somewhere?

    • The 2004 Manual also covers 2005 Prii
    • The 2006 Manual effectively covers 2006-2009 Prii
    • Only the 2010 Owner's manual is available on the site
      (so far)
    • I have not seen a "Free" manual for either the 2001-2003 Prius or the earlier models from Japan.

Anyone try downloading the manual using this Adobe Web Capture method lately and know if it still works?

Well, got my 2 day subscription to TIS which ends tomorrow at midnight and I thought I would give go at to it to try and download the 2002 Prius repair manual.

At first I was trying to get it with Adobe Acrobat X Pro, but every time I tried to append the links to the pdf file, adobe would download the log in page of TIS. I tried it while logged in to TIS on Internet Explorer and also tried it on Firefox.

    So how do I:
    ?

Then I tried downloading it with Wget, but it just gets a blank html page and not the pdf.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or did they change something since?

The pdf seems to be embedded in a html file, not sure if that what how it was before.

It's on their wiki. I don't have enough posts, so I can't post a link, but go to their site and at the top of the page click Wiki, under "Auto Ibride" click Toyota, then Prius V2, scroll to the bottom to "Manuali tecnici Prius".
