I'm more interested in how long the drive was, though before that 32 hour rest. Was it a normal, complete drive with car hitting regular operating temperature (i.e. it was running for 5 or more min) or was it a quick on and off like you drove to a neighbor's house and back and then parked it before it hit operating temp?

With careful recollection to the best of my ability, here is what happened:

Friday afternoon drove about 60 miles stop/go & freeway cruising. Saturday didn't drive at all. Sunday backed car out of garage to wash, then back in and it sat until Tuesday morning, which upon startup it knocked. So it does fit in with the "short cycle prior to knock event theory."

Mine has 10k on it and it has happened a hand full of times so far. Goes away in about 3-5 seconds. It goes to the dealer on Wednesday. I'll see what they say. But my guess is that they will give me the old "we can't duplicate" the problem answer.

For the sake of reporting...once again, same circumstances, same start-up rattle/knock happened yesterday morning 27 June. Ridiculous. At what point will this become acknowledged by the dealers/Toyota?

Hi Pixel happened to me too last time around march I have never felt so alone and without answers before with any of the other car brands I owned before! The only hope is 2013 package fix with a huge list of to-do list for Toyota.

I can understand that Toyota may be working on a remedy and explanation for this disturbing problem. But to act as if they've never heard of this is insulting to their loyal customers.

Add me to the list - Rough cold start after short cold drive the previous evening.

It happened a few months ago. Just now got around to searching the forum.

I started the car up the night before to back it up about 100 feet, and turned it off. Next morning started it up and sounded like a spinning rubber belt was whacking around in the engine compartment. Turned it off within a second. Tried again after inspection under the hood (maybe 5 min. later). Same sound so immediately I shut it down.

I called Toyota Roadside and had it towed to the dealer. They put their best guy on it, but we couldn't replicate it even after leaving it overnight and cold starting the next morning. At least I have my report of it officially documented, for what that is worth.

I would be willing to give Toyota a little lee way on this what with their country being decimated and all but after they way they screwed me on a 2009 corolla Lemon, prior to their troubles in Japan well let's just say if there is a better vehicle on the market when I am through with this car I will be strongly looking at other manufacturers.

I do not let my wife drive this car, the brake issue is real, if I hit a rough patch with your foot on the brake to slow down it does surge forward and that is bad software.

And that my fellow Toyota fans is how you deal with a company that becomes not only irresponcible but is unresponsive and lies. You vote with your wallet and buy elsewhere, I truly believe Toyotas best days are behind them and that just plain makes me unhappy.:(

If not for the circumstances involving the Corolla this car would not be with me now.... Long ..... Long story.

The Toyota dealerships I have dealt with in my area like 6 of them are all scummy the operations are horrible.

I've now made the decision that I will be making a recording of all cold starts, with the intention of taking the recording of a "clunker" start to the dealership. Perhaps that will stimulate them to act a bit more intent of fixing the problem, or at least admitting to the fact that something is not right.

This situation is reminding me of when I owned a Porsche Boxster, and Porsche was getting serious heat from owners who had experienced total engine failure. Porsche never admitted that their engines had a serious design flaw, but replaced quite a few complete engines, many out of warranty. Those are very expensive power plants. My particular car didn't experience the failure, but several friends in the car club did. Unfortunately, they won't be purchasing another Porsche.

At 50,000kms had a very bad rattle and missfire. Thought it was a dropped valve. Rang the dealer they trucked it into their workshop and ran diagnosis. The problem was the injectors. Fixed under warranty and goes like a charm. Just turned over 80,000kms

Earthquake happened in Feb. This issue has been reported by many people way back in 2010.
Says who? I have not seen a single piece of real evidence that anybody actually knows what this cold-start problem is caused by!

I had my first experience with this anomally a week ago.

Car had sat idle for 8 days in my garage. Temperature was approximately 80 degrees f. Vehicle had 10000 miles and I have owned for 6 months. I hope they can figure this out

Got the oil analysis done. Below is the comments from Blackstone Labs. Nothing alarming but copper and iron counts were a little high. They didn't mention anything about the iron though. This was my 3rd oil change. (30,000 miles currently)

TRAVIS: Copper (from brass/bronze parts) is higher than expected, but otherwise your engine handled the 15,000-mile oil change quite well. Universal averages show typical wear for Toyota's 1.8L Prius engine after about 7,900 miles on the oil. If this is the second or third oil change your engine has seen, the extra copper is likely from wear-in and should improve next time. The trace of fuel isn't a concern. The TBN was 2.6, plenty of active additive remaining in the oil for a longer run. A TBN is considered too low at 1.0. Try up to 17,000 miles next and then check back.

Had this happen for a second time the other day. I moved the car after washing it, made sure to wait until the ICE turned off before shutting off the engine as I usually do (indicating warmed-up status supposedly), but the next start it happened, very briefly.

This was an 80 degree day. The only other time it happened was under a similar quick-start/quick-off situation during the winter where I didn't let the ICE stop itself.

it's happened twice now. After the hybrid system was turned on, a definite rattle was heard once the engine turned on.

    Rattle, vibration, wild weird.
