Had the recall done today and was assured that front and back battery access points would read identical voltages. They did not! Im quite sure when car was new voltage checked identical at both points, ie: > 12 VDC. Now there is a voltage drop of something more than .5Volt. Has anybody else experienced this ???? AND what is normal? this does not seem right. Andy,

Gave the accessory battery a charge for 4-5 hours, Voltage at both places = > 12 VDC. However, next morning, level at front was 9 volts and at rear was > 12volts After the recall the "Technician" assured on the work order that both voltages would be equal, because "He tightened the Battery contacts" Now what to do........try again at Toyota or wait til it quits again.

cant be the same. the wire has a voltage across it and the one closest to the battery will read higher. the front connections are two car lengths away, they will most certainly read lower

I agree somewhat, every wire within a circuit has resistance and will experience some voltage drop, especially a closed circuit. However this is an open circuit. I could live with .5 voltage drop but 3 volts is way too much and as I say when the car was new the Voltages were equal. I know the Engineers designed the proper size wire to eliminate unnecessary voltage drop.

The "technician" that I married says you will see different voltages, chill out. Don't freak out so much. Maybe from now on you should do all your own work just in case one of those trained, experienced guys doesn't know as much about fixing cars as you do.

Here's a tip. For good luck, stand in a puddle and rub orange cables...

Oh, btw, in all seriousness, the recall has nothing to do with your voltage.

Thankyou for the feedback, I have noticed that the 3 volt drop occurs when I return home so maybe something is still running that I cannot hear. How-ever upon disconnecting the 12 volt battery totally the voltage read under 12Volts. Never have I experienced any car battery reading less than stated voltage, unless it's shot. Normal cells read 2.2 volts times 6 cells = 13.2 volts. In practical terms this figure (13.2) would never sustain, however something over 12 volts would be considered normal. So is the HV Bat not capable of holding 12 Volts, is there a maladjustment? Is the battery defective. Has anybody else observed this? Actually Im pretty good at repairing my own cars and we don't have any puddles in California, seeing different voltages....yes, but not less than 12VDC. Now the designed SOC for the Accessory Battery might have been a "bit" more of a professional reply.

This is extremely hard to interpret, andyprius. How exactly are you measuring this? What points are you measuring voltage from and what kind of instrument is it?

I think you are way too worried about this. Your car works, doesn't it? Where's the problem? If there was a problem, the car is smart enough to set off a warning light to tell you to take it in to be fixed. I told you earlier the ECU update has nothing to do with this voltage difference you're seeing.

I was tempted to just ignore your post altogether after seeing a couple of other almost 'conspiracy-theory' type posts you've written, but in the end decided to try somehow to help although I had no idea what you're doing or what you're asking for.

You want a "professional" response? Try posting something a little more clear, and less paranoid...

I think that many of us have never had a highly trained automotive technician work on our cars. There are many here that are struggling to understand the complex system in this car. We have varying, back grounds, training and education. What brings us together is an interest in the Prius and how it works. Testing the battery and the under the hood leads is a normal behavior of such a person. I don't think there is any more distrust with the dealer technicians. Remember that the dealer is spendy, more over head. Many of us have not had ideal experiences with the sales staff. They can be a bit abrasive. I have never had a bad repair at a dealer but I have had expensive ones. Please be a bit more tolerant of the rest of us, I think we are on the same team. Besides pharmacists are my best friends they save my butt on a daily basis.

Thankyou for your return post, this is fun. I realize the Recall had no relation to the Accessory battery voltage level. The only reason I was able to bring the car in for the recall is because I keep a small charged battery in the trunk for jump starting. The symptom was the car would not power down, go into gear, go into park. After jumping the battery I was able to power down, reboot and everything was normal. In the process of jumping the battery I was naturally curious as to its charge at that time: it was only 9VDC. ( a problem ) Measured with a normal digital multimeter. I have several. As for the Paranoid letters, that was a joke, I thought you got that? I think most of the people on this site are very interested in how the Prius works, everybody is at a different stage. Some of the techies are extremely sharp, some people don't know how to change thier oil, but that's all right, they ask, they learn, they try/ IF one checks the positive and negative posts of a battery one will measure the Voltage ( or force ) Usings a normal mutimeter, digital or analog, with connections undone, the open or no load voltage level can be read. To hope that the Automobile has intelligence is presuming too much and could land you in the middle of the desert at 120 in the shade. Thier are only two places to measure battery voltage and the Owners Manual informs you. I have been quite precise in my descriptions and numbers. All I have received from you is inane questions. As a previous Electronic Tech I also have written off or snowed the customer with such statements as tightened terminals, reseated box, calibrated and aligned. Frequency tracker, etc. its all just a snow job. My basic question still hangs..................Normal SOC (the Battery is the heart of an automobile, even more so on the Prius) Now have you followed all this or are you ready to take another puff?

sorry i have to agree with galaxee. ½ volt is easy to believe. 3 volts is a bit much however. a good 12 volt battery would never have that kind of voltage swing. nominal charge is 13.2 volts. 10.2 volts is a volt and half past dead

obtw... the voltage on ANY AND ALL open circuits is zero

Anyway, to get back ON subject, apparently the recall went OK, took an afternoon and the next morning, all my memories were lost, must have disconnected Acc Battery, so I had to reset. Car has not malfunctioned since. Dealer: Roseville Mall Toyota, CA

Well 3 volts it was, also I defined it as a no load circuit, one cannot check a battery without a load inbetween ( ie: the meter) to truly have an open cicuit one wouldn't do anything, just stare at removed battery. But nice to have that 10.2 volt figure, in lieu of Toyota Technical expertise, it's better than nothing. Please continue to follow this thread as more follows........

Glad to see you hanging in there Galaxee, remember from the beginning of this threa I maintained a .5 voltage drop to a 3 volt voltage drop when measured at the front of the car. 13.2 represents a brand new, newly charged battery that has never been recycled thru normal operation. In practical terms 13. 2 would never be read except during a charge or immediately thereafter. BUT...... this was never my main theme . As you may recall, I asked why there was a voltage differential between the front and rear Acc Bat access points ....I maintained an uneccessary , or weak charging. It turned out I was right. NEW CHAPTER; This morning after parking at the local shopping center, my car died, only my little handy gel cell saved me and I was able to limp to the Dealer (I had complained about this problem before, and the Tech tightened the Bat.......HA) Now this actually represents a fix, if the voltage is checked before and after the tightening, to prove the fix) He, the tech did not fix the problem! So now I'm sitting at home ( 1630 ) CA time awaiting the repair of my Prius. All of this May or May not be related to the recall. None of us has the knowledge to say one way or the other with the exception of our very sharp technical entusiast Prius owners. Took the car in about 0930 this morning. Will keep you apprised of updates.

BTW Galaxee YOU may now stand in a puddle and rub orange cables! This site should be for the edification of it's users to speak congenially and respectfully and exchange useful information. NOT to insult. It turns out my analysis was correct as well as the way I went about it. Your contribution deserves a big nul, nada, zero. Better to say nothing than something nasty. Andyprius.
