    Greetings,

    I have a 2006 Prius with the JBL in-dash 6-CD changer.
Strange thing happened today. All of the dash buttons for the audio system stopped working (PWR, eject, seek, cd/aux, etc.) Basically, the only control I have now is through the steering wheel buttons. I can still control all the functions (except power on/off) as long as I use the steering wheel.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    -Adriano

That is exceedingly strange. Since it all happened at once, it may be a loose plug connection or a fuse. Can you cycle through the different modes and turn it on and off with the steering wheel MODE button? Can you use voice commands, if you have that option?

I can cycle through the modes using the steering wheel MODE button. I don't know how to turn it off via that button, I thought that wasn't an option.
I haven't tried the voice commands.

I guess this is my first opportunity to make use of the extended warranty I purchased since I am over the 36K miles limit.

    Hi Adriano,

Since you have warranty coverage, no worries. If you feel like experimenting, try hitting the front panel (where the non-working buttons are located) with the palm of your hand to see if this will fix the loose connection temporarily.

Well it does sound like a loose plug problem, what ever the case, please post a "What it was" post.

    I would like to know!!

    Thanks de Pat KK6PD

My B.E.G. .... Internal open circuit inside the head unit.

    1) A blown fuse would shut down the entire unit. Toyota uses two fuses to power the head unit, one constant power and one key power. If either were blown, the unit would not play.

    2) A loose plug would also shut off the entire unit if you have a separate amp ( which the JBL system most likely has).

    3) Since the steering wheel controls can still control the unit, I would expect the problem to be inside the head unit.

B.T.W. To turn off the radio using the steering wheel controls, press and hold the "Mode" button for 2-3 seconds. The unit will turn off.

has anyone ever had their radio lose its presets while playing a cd?

i got my cd replaced even though the dealership couldn't not replicate a problem

the errors that were (probably) logged for this event were:
    LAN MONITOR EMV
    CODE 01 - DB SUB CODE 190 - 30 -3
    DSP AMP
    CODE 01- E1 SUB CODE 110-FF-1

I think i got it nailed down to as lightly scratched or dirty/smeard Cds
being played and causing errors on the Prius BUS (or a lack of a better term)
and causing the radio or cd player to disconnect and reconnect thus losing
    your presets in the process.

sometimes you can hear a short to long beep while the cd is playing and
the presets are gone when you switch from cd to radio, sometimes not

the clock and window settings do not change, and the car was in ready so that
pretty much rules out anything wrong with the 12v

i wrote a letter saturday to toyota about it, suspecting there is a minor defect in
the headunit or somewhere in the car

this has happened to me personally about 6 times since feb 2007

Thanks for all the input. I will take it to the service dept. Hopefully my local dealer will easily honor my extended warranty that I purchased elsewhere.

This also happened to me several months ago; luckily I am still in the warranty period. The biggest issue was that the CD player held my CDs as hostages -- I could play then using the steering wheel controls, but couldn't eject or load them (a concern with Audiobooks from the library). My Toyota dealer diagnosed it as a malfunctioning radio head, and oredered and installed a replacement. Since then -- no problems.

I was lucky; my unit had an intermittent problem and started working again before the replacement head arrived, so I was able to eject my discs. Otherwise, I was told that the head unit would have to be returned to the service center for disassembly to retrieve the discs, and that I might get them back in 6-8 weeks. Good luck!

Wow, I sure hope all the CD's in my changer are mine!

As a quick try solution for retrieving stuck CD's, I usually try disconnecting the power to the radio for a few moments then reconnecting it. Sometimes, "rebooting " the system will allow you to eject the CD's. It doesn't always work, but it can save you from having to wait for the radio maufacturer to return the discs. Try disconnecting the 12v negative cable for a few seconds. A simple thing to try that may save a hassle.

OK looks like the problem is intermittent. The CD changer console came back to life today. I quickly ejected all the CD's in case it decides to die again.

This is almost a year old thread but I have the exact same probelm as the OP.

Anyone have an epiphany as to the cause of controls suddenly not working, and only steering wheel controls are working.

Please do not tell me I need a new head unit.

Well this morning I go to gym, and head unit works fine. I have no clue how it "fixed" it self. I swear the indash buttons did not function...power, volume, fm,sat/am, seek, and others.

Sorry can not shed any light on this if others have a similar problem

I have had almost the same problem as the OP... almost all the dash controls quit working... I could still change the volume from the dash and power on and off, but no other controls worked.... I could not switch FM1 to FM2, AUX, use the scan button, or even manually tune with the knob. It's kinda like what happens when I am backing up and can't switch from FM1 to FM2... except I am not backing up!

This happened one time before and it went away the same day. This morning it happened again and hopefully full function will also return later, but I do wonder what is causing this.

If anyone has any thoughts I'd appreciate it! I just passed the 3 yr warranty period (and I picked this up used so I couldn't get the extended warranty) so if I have a repair coming up I wanna know about it!

Can we bump this thread so the OP can tell us what the fix was? My unit just had the same thing happen today; cds are hostage and unit works so long as I use the steering wheel controls. I think I'm on the border of the 1-year comprehensive coverage for a Certified Used vehicle, but I did notice the intermittent problem several months ago (it fixed itself in less than 30 minutes).

    Thanks!

Oddly enough, my JBL system is working normally again. This is the second intermittent failure it has had. Very strange.
