Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly in previous addresses.

But it should be obvious to any of you who have taken basic economics, that the superior battery range of the Volt will save more money than the Prius PHV.

I asked Tim and Ben about this, and they explained it and I'm reading this straight from the teleprompter.

Because the Volt has a clearly superior battery range of 37 miles as opposed to the Prius PHV, and as the Volt gets an average of around 37MPG when running on gas, each time that Volt is charged to full and used, you will have saved the equivalent of 1 gallon of gas. That's a good $4 for those of you out in California ($4 for premium unleaded).

Now the Prius PHV on the other hand can only go 13 miles on a full charge, and sadly, it gets over 50mpg on the gas engine, which means if you're lucky, you'll save a QUARTER of a gallon of regular gas. This means the foolish Prius PHV owners will save *LESS* than a dollar, where the Volt owners save over $4.

Please, don't cloud the issue with 'talking points' like 'The Prius gets over 50mpg!' 'The Volt gets less than most economy cars out there!' or junk like 'The Prius Costs $10,000 less!' Or 'The Prius runs on regular!' or 'The Prius will last longer!' The numbers don't lie.

I'm sorry, just LOOK at the Volt's warranty, it's backed by the full faith and credit of government motors to last 8 years or 100,000 miles. Do you REALLY believe that the battery in the Prius will last 10 years or 150,000 miles after their nuclear reactor failures, and later condemnation of nuclear power altogether?

I think it's clear who has better engineering.

These are just some of the reasons why I've personally approved at $7,500 tax rebate for each and every Volt owner. If the Prius PHV were superior, don't you think it would be entitled to the same rebate, or more?

Yes, I know this is a 'Prius' forum, and you all will come back at me with the 'talking points' from today's radio shows, but would you put your partisan biases aside for a minute and purchase the vehicle that's more expensive, uses more expensive gas, has far higher emissions, doesn't qualify for the HOV lane, has a lower resale value, and gets worse mileage?!? Anything else would be un-American, government motors needs your support after it's handout!

We MUST do our part by redistributing our MPG 'wealth' to those who are less fortunate to drive vehicles that only get 37mpg. Clearly, you are not deserving of the MPG numbers you've earned and paid for.

Now I really must be going, Harry is throwing yet another plan at me that I'll veto because it doesn't cover my *** through '12.

These numbers worked for ME in my campaign, I *WILL* cut the deficit in half, and the Volt will save you FAR more money.

BBL, I'm out for a smoke.

You are kidding me right? So I'm gonna go and spend into the upper 30 grand for something that has yet to pass muster over the edifice of time what the public will finally decide??

Not very many Volt owners out there compared to just the current year Prius owners, not to mention the 10 years Prius has been made and improved on over the years.

If you wanna get critical that big batteries are better, you might as well go whole hog and get a Tesla S for around $70 grand. 300 mile range, and you would not spend a drop in gas.

I think I'll keep my Prius and we'll see how many Volts hit the road...

But sadly, you need to understand them.

One of the problems with your analysis, is that you have forgotten that electricity cost money.

If electricity costs more than $0.22 per kWh, than a Prius (cordless) will always be cheaper than a Volt. For commutes (that is, distance between charging) greater than 108 miles, the Prius is cheaper than the Volt. Between those extremes either the Volt or the Prius is cheaper depending on exact circumstances (shorter commutes, and cheaper electricity favor the Volt).

If you add the Leaf into the equations, a large hunk of the 'Volt is cheaper' section get covered by the 'Leaf is cheaper'. Once we get EPA number for the Prius plugin, we can examine that as well, preliminary indications seem to be that the Prius plugin will be cheaper in the initial 13 miles, and will take a bit off the top (high miles, or expensive electricity) as well. We shall see.

I have a spreadsheet which shows all this

Amusing OP, in a low brow, don't worry about the facts kind of way. If it was written by a six year old I would say the writer is talented.

What if gas is $8/gallon? What if you use 67% EV miles and 33% Gasoline miles like the average volt owner does today? The satire doesn't really work, but I guess you got the hole easily, but didn't realize the post was a joke. It is poor satire, since some of the arguments are ok.

    +1
Check out the OPs name = POTUS (President of the united states) and the tone and you will find an attempt at satire.

    HAHAHAHA
This is the funniest thing I have read in a while. What is even funnier is the people who didn't get it. I guess the OP didn'take it clear that it was a joke.:D

And yet the OP is still driving a Prius instead of the Volt.

My spreadsheet starts with the assumption of $4.00 / gallon (regular) gasoline, and computes the cost per 100 miles based on distance between charges and cost of electricity. Increasing the cost of gasoline, just shifts the lines around. Small commutes more favor the Volt even at higher electricity prices.

67% EV miles just means a distance between charges of 55 miles. The Prius at that point (and $8.00 gas) is cheaper when electricity costs $0.35 per kWh or more.
