Options for Installing XM In Prius Near Charlotte?

    If you get the DVD from PriusXM, I think you will see that it is not too difficult. I was going to have an audio shop do it, but once I watched the DVD, I was ready to take it on myself.

    If you use the photos here as a guide, you do not have to disassemble any of the center or left side of the dash, just a small bit of the right side:

    It all comes apart pretty easy.

    I put my antenna in the center (for looks). I had photos posted but the thread got whacked. I can post them again if you are interested.

    You can probably find a local audio shop that can do it. Take a drive to them, and "interview" them. Look at the cars they are working on and the personell and if the shop is kept nice, etc. Print out the Metro document to show them what they ar up against.

    (for reference, the idea of reaching the radio from the right only was posted here long before me, I just put photos of the technique up)

    Thank you Marlin and Baxsie for your suggestions!

    I'm going to try to arrange this as a surprise for my husband (who reads here, I'm hoping he doesn't check this forum for a few days until after my posts have dropped like a stone) for Christmas.

    I called all the dealerships around here. They are, as I predicted, utterly clueless.

    I will print out the instructions Marlin provided & might go with Baxsie's suggestion for ordering the kit with the DVD so I can watch it and make a determination. Heck, I might just order the kit with the DVD & give it to my husband and offer to A) Help him do it here at the house or B) pay for an audio installer if he wants to go that way.

    Either way we've definitely gotta get the XM integrated. We have the Roadie style clip on unit right now going through the cassette deck and it blows chunks, mostly because it rattles and I have to use a whole new cassette adapter to listen to my MP3 player when I'm using the car.

    I got the PriusXM kit with the DVD this spring. I was somewhat apprehensive about doing it myself at first and after reading the printed instructions I thought that there was no way that I was going to do this myself. Then, after watching the DVD I figured that it didn't look all that hard and I did it myself, and it really wasn't dificult at all. It took me about 1 1/2 hours, and while doing it I had the DVD in my laptop on the back seat and watched it step by step as I went along. The worst part was that having the dashboard all disassembled LOOKS pretty scary, but it all fits back together very easily, and after having installed it myself, I feel confident that most anybody can do it. Just take a deep breath and take your time.

    Oh, and it is very much worth it!!!

    I had a buddy of mine install XM radio, and a rear camera for me. He owns his own audio shop. He ordered the unit from Toyota which is for the Solara. I asked him to install the antenna in the rear center like baxsie did, (I liked the photo's baxsie posted) my buddy said no way would he put that ugly thing outside on the car. He mounted the antenna under the dash. My XM Radio works great.
