Yes it is possible but the problem you face is that if your Prius did not come with HIDs then you have a halogen reflector-based headlight assembly and those are a terrible choice for HIDs. They reflect way too much light into the eyes on oncoming drivers and could lead to an accident or a ticket from law enforcement officers. Those of us who are into doing HID retrofits regularly make fun of those who install an HID kit into a halogen headlights. It's considered childish, unsafe and very inconsiderate to other drivers on the road.

You can perform an HID projector retrofit and have all of the benefits of high quality HIDs without blinding others and the light output is 100x better than an HID kit in a halogen housing. For more information I suggest reading HIDPlanet.com. They are a wealth of information on HIDs. They also have a funny thread based on HIDs in halogen projects. You may have to sign up to see some of the pictures.

This picture illustrates how HID glare can be a safety problem. Picture this on a dark country road with sharp corners. eek!

Left side is a typical halogen. Right side is an HID kit in halogen housing (bad)

The Beam pattern will also look goofy and not provide nearly the same amount of light concentrated where you need it most.

HIDs in a projector. See how it is not as blinding? Yet it is waaaay brighter than HIDs in a halogen housing.

HID kit in a quality projector. See how sharply defined the cutoof is? This keeps the light out of other drivers eyes.

This is what a high quality projector retrofit looks like when drivin down the road. This is a quad projector retro so a you can expect it to be a little less bright with two projectors.

My pleasure. I think it is a better to be safe with a bulb upgrade. Besides, the UK seems to be more strict when it comes to headlight glare than the U.S.. They have different standards than we do. :)
