real life you get 30 MPG and be very happy about it as 30 MPG is good for small SUV.

Considering that VW TDI get 34 mpg in EPA cycle, these would get at least 20% less.

Yesterday was driving my Prius and there was a Ford diesel 4wd with the double tires on each side rear and each time it downshifted (guy drove it quite hard) it would belch huge amounts of black smoke into the air. Its tailpipes, which were in the bed behind the cab, were totally blackened :D

petrol IC engines are tested under the same rules and are likewise overquoted

This goes along with circumventing the emissions controls. I'm sure some will circumvent the devices(the DPF) because of repair expense. Some, to improve fuel economy(the EGR). Then there are those, like the above example, because they think it is cool. Despite it actually worsening economy, because to engine is running rich, they want to blow puffs of smoke.

Also keep in mind when you see a smoking diesel on the road that these vehicles have a longer service life than a gas car. That dually with truck stacks could easily be an '80s model year. We are fortunate that the diesel fleet is small in NA, because the turn over to the vehicles with emission controls will be slower.

Many achieve the EPA quoted mileage in the Prius.

Exactly. Big belches of smoke are apparently cool, so people purposely modify them to make it so. Saddening but true.

Hogwash. There are old diesels and there are old petrols. No argument that diesel engines go long distances or long service lives, but so do their gas equivalents. It is a matter of the engine maker not the fuel it is burning. Yes a tractor can reach a million miles with few issues, but a big3 will be lucky to get to 6 digits without repair work. I see just as many (if not more) 80's corollas, tercels, and civics on the road as I do blazers or F-whatever-50's from the same era.

I wasn't limiting my statement to just cars and light trucks, though it appeared so. The biggest users of diesel are semis, so their long service life is a concern when it comes to improving fleet emissions.

The old('80s era) diesel engines, in trucks, are hardier than their gas equiveiant. Diesels need to be built with sturdier parts. They are also a relatively simple machine. This is before everyone got a turbo. It is also the time when all the big three got their diesels from a major independent engine manufacturer. Dodge still uses Cummins, and GM used Detriot, and Ford used International.

Even if the transmission died an early death, or the frame rusted, the engine was vaulable enough to warrant the repair, or transplant into a new body, or even boat.

Well researched there mate! Cant get a better emission rate than that! I also have to say that Yorkshire is one gorgeous countryside place.
