Couldn't find anything that says this kind of thing is verboten, so I figured I'd say hi and introduce myself. B)

I'm James Brooks, from both Indianapolis and Key West (parents divorced) and am currently a student at Virginia Tech. Our family has a 2002 Prius with 120k miles on it, all of them lovingly earned, and I just wanted to say hi and ask a few questions. I'll hopefully get a Prius of my own in a couple months, once the check from my totalled car comes in (flooded in Katrina's storm surge).

We've had a great time with our family Prius. My mom drives it to and from work every day, and it's really a blast to drive when I get to drive it myself. I mean, who doesn't love a touchscreen in the dash? We haven't had any problems with ours, but now that the warranty's expired, we're crossing our fingers. :p Had to have the computer replaced once on it, but just routine maintainance so far. Right now, I'm looking for a Christmas gift idea for my mom--something she can use on her Prius, since she's in it so much. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

That's about it for me. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving. :)

I always give students and recent grads this advice.
    Don't buy a new car.
Buy an inexpensive relatively reliable used car and save your money for a downpayment on a house instead. B)

I was a student new grad at one time and bought a brand new RX7 loved it and could still buy a house. But it is good advice.

Look at the shops there is a lot of stuff you could get for her, depends on how much you want to spend.

There are plenty of options for buying a house or condo without needing a downpayment. Many of which do not involve PMI.

I say do what you want, just make sure it's within your means.

Welcome to priuschat JK. Take a look at the PriusChat Offers and also what some of the sponsors of this site have available. You may not want to buy her a new set of tires but there is a calendar, a heat shield, hood for the display, and lots of other good stuff.

The '02s didn't all come with cruise control. Does hers have it? Does she drive on the open road much? Your dealer can add it if she could use it.

The '02s didn't come with CD players. Does she listen to CDs? Your dealer can add this, too.

Who does the routine maintenance on the car---oil changes? 40K miles/year is quite a bit. Not very warm and fuzzy, but---pre-paid oil changes?

Got seat covers? Need 'em? GT makes good ones that fit perfectly. Get 'em at Metro Toyota in Kalamazoo, MI. (Think it's toyotapart.com)

    Go, Hokies!

JK - welcome to PriusChat! Whatever you decide, your mother will really love it (speaking as a mother here). You forgot to mention your budget. Some smaller things would be a coinholder or coupons to wash her car (done by you). Let us know what you decide!

Thanks for all the tips! I'm keeping notes... ;)

As for my budget, I'd like to keep it under sixty dollars. I'm just a poor college student. Cruise control is installed as is a CD player. The pre-paid oil changes sounds like a good idea. I know she'll use those.
