    Okay. You make a good argument. But when the same management (other than maybe the top one or two) continues to run the "new" company, a reasonable person would not expect any changes. They'll continue to build poor-quality cars, and when they go bankrupt again, and the court again relieves them of obligations, they will again do their best to weasel out of fixing "design defects." Which brings me back to my original conclusion: It is foolish to buy a GM car, either new or used.

    Question to ponder: When "New" GM goes bankrupt, and gets bailed out, will the court or the government require "New-New" GM to honor the warranties from "Original" GM?

    "It's supposed to do that." so it isn't a problem so the warranty doesn't apply. This attitude helped push me into a Prius. Thank you Olds.

    Now THAT is over simplification. Generally, when criminal activity takes place, a company is not allowed to escape it's "liabilities" ... whether intentional-civil / criminal / or a blend of both. Here, GM's acts were in part, criminal:

    Many of GM's sites are more steril than the surface of the moon. Except the moon's sterility isn't toxic ... just steril. But GM land got that way through volitional acts. Because of that, we have 13 states that should have been able to prosecute board members for criminal acts of destroying land and ground watter supplies through deadly toxins. Instead? The company was parted off ... the criminal side - and the "oh were not too bad" side.

    The result? GM's legacy lives on. Federal super funds will pay for GM's toxic crimes for decades. Meanwhile GM brags, "see? we're all paid up!" Really? Than why is it that untold millions in GM stock are still owned by the Feds?! Yea, just try and rationalize GM activity away. Somehow, that's what's happening.

    But a reasonable person isn't always right, legally speaking.

    And I never suggested that I would buy a GM product. The Volt for instance interests me greatly, but if I were buying a new car right now, I would be loathe to buy one, simply because it is a GM product. There are some other issues too, but that is the largest one.

    Hopefully they improve in the future. They are better cars now then they were 20 years ago after all. They have made huge strides; unfortunately only after being forced to by the market, but they have improved. But for now, they still are not where I would start buying them.

    We weren't talking about criminal activity though, were we?

    And who said I was even remotely trying to rationalize GM's past behavior? I never even hinted at that. Personally, I think they should have been allowed to go belly up, since it was not some out of the blue occurance that got them into trouble, but decades and decades of incredibly poor and short sighted management.
