Wow. Just like many people on this thread, I just purchased a new prius and the dealer charged me $2,255 for the extended warranty for 84 months/75,000 miles with $100 disappearing deductible. The finance guy told me this was because it included wear and tear. Is this a fair price?

Re:used vehicles & Discounted Toyota Prius Extended Warranty /Service Contracts

We are very close to finalizing a purchase of a 2008 Prius. It has 30,000 miles on it and we are purchasing through the dealer. According to carfax, it looks like the original title/ registration inservice date was 9/25/08. Would this date qualify for the warranty shack extended program? Delivery to the states was on 8/8/08. This info makes a difference as to which car we purchase. Thanks for any feedback.
    Best,
    Eric

    Hi Eric,

If you email me the VIN I can double check the date in the Toyota database to be sure. If it's Sept. 25, 2008 we're good. My email is in my signature below.

Hello Tory, I have been going over this chat site before we purchase a 2011 Prius III. I was wondering. I plan on playing this out with the dealer and see if I can turn the tables and have them drop the price for the Ext Plan knowing I still can get it cheaper from you.(7/100k or 6/100k) I know they might throw down the pressure when I don't buy. Any suggestions before I hit the dealer.
    Thanks, John

    John,

I'd just see what they hit you with for a price, if they're fair purchase it...if they take a shot and try and hit you over the head on the price I'd show zero interest, and contact me after you pick up your car.

The word "No" comes to mind...

Even if the Detailer does lower his price after endless haggling, why give that purchase to someone who was more than willing to over-charge you at the start?

Yes, coverage is good anywhere in North America, so it's good in both the U.S. and Canada.

Purchasing the policy for a vehicle originally sold in Canada is a little more complicated, but it can be done. Email me for details and a quote at the email address in my signature.

Hey Troy, I went in knowing my range and they showed me the retail value of $1700 for a 6yr/100k. I came back with NO Thanks but if they came close to 1100 I would take a look. They came back with 1185 so I took it. They mentioned that many others come in and ask for something like 500 for the coverage knowing that its not workable so they don't even make a counter. I probably could have snagged it cheaper from you but I was also able to get the Prius III for 200 over invoice. I went online to Costco Auto to see what I could get since every dealer I talked with would not go much below sticker price. Well Costco's deal was 500 over invoice and then the dealer cut 300 more off. So I felt like it worked out well for us.

    Thanks
    John

Purchase price and extended warranty are two completely separate deals. Furthermore, the extended warranty does not have to be purchased until the end of the 3-year factory warranty.

    Warranty Shack

I just purchased a prius yesterday. I looked through some of this thread, it starts out saying to get a quote from warranty shack. I did this already. Is that still the best option? Any other places that I should apply to, to get a quote? Sorry if you've been asked this question 1,000 times.
    Thanks in advance.

You can't beat the price you get from buying the warranty here thru Troy, plus he gives you the best service and is always happy to answer any questions. Plus a portion of his profit goes to Priuschat to help with the costs of running this website.

Quick Questions from a newbie -- just purchased my 2011 Prius today!

    1. Is there any reason at all to purchase this extended warranty before the 36,000 mile mark?

    2. What exactly are people worried about failing when they decide to purchase this warranty? My understanding is that the hybrid drivetrain is covered up to 80,000 (or is it 100,000? I haven't had time to read my owner's manual as I JUST got back from the dealership and successfully deflected their aggressive tactics to get me to purchase the platinum warranty for 1350). In any case, it seems that the warranty would mostly serve to cover the regular drivetrain, which should be the same sturdy, reliable Toyota drivetrain we expect...

    Thanks in advance for help/advice!!

I have been reading for a few hours and what I can't get a clear indication on is whether the extended is really worth the expense since the Prius comes with a fairly robust warrant as it is.

Is there a website that clearly identifies what the extended covers which the standard does not aside from duration?

The majority of the computers and electronics in the vehicle are only covered as part of the 3 yr / 36K portion of the factory warranty. Beyond that, the factory warranty only covers the powertrain, and the 4 major hybrid components (Hybrid Battery, Inverter/Converter, Battery Control Module, and the Hybrid Control Module).

Here's the link to the Toyota Financial website where you can download the brochure and see the basic plan summaries.

Troy, have traded my 09 Silver Pine Mica Touring in on Saturday for a Blizzard Pearl Prius V Level 3 ... LOVE IT SO VERY MUCH ... they spoke w me about a Prepaid Maintenance program for the vehicle at $864 for 75,000 miles ... do you have some in put on the benefits " or not " of this program, maybe point me to a specific thread to learn more about this? Also, on my 09, the warranty still in effect to 125,000 miles. Is that still available and should I purchase it now with you versus later for additional coverage, or is it simply duplicating coverage? The dealership said I had until noon Monday to let them know if I wanted the PrePaid Maintenace, as they usually let you decide at the time of purchase only. Would rather purchase with you if PrePaid Maintance is smart and available.

On a very happy note, my previous warranty paid for itself over and over again..had to use it several times and was and am very grateful to have had it.

Very interested in finding out if I should purchase a new warranty now or wait...I drive a lot ... the 09 was three years old with just about 110k miles on her.

So far in 212 miles since last night, averaging 43 mpg on the Prius V .. im a happy girl <3

    Warm Regards,

    Erin

    Hi Erin,

It was nice talking with you earlier today. I just had to quote your sentence above as I get asked all the time if anyone ever uses the warranty. It's always great to hear feedback from people that have used it.

    Thanks!!

I want a warranty! Looking forward to your response, Troy!

Hi Troy. I am a newbie to the Prius world and to this website. In August, I became the proud owner of a 2011 Prius. I love it! Although purchasing an extended warranty was/is really important to me, I got sucked into purchasing it at the dealer which was a mistake. That night, I logged into this awesome website and found out that you are selling it for WAY less, and gave back the warranty I purchased at the dealer. They weren't happy with me, but the did it reluctantly.

Now it's time to purchase the warranty. I just sent you a quote request asking for a quote on a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty. I also contacted Toyota to get a quote on the same warranty (I am curious how much they plan on stealing from me). I am buying it from whoever gives me the best deal. I am sure that will be you. It sounds like all the folks on this site agree.

Ahead of time...thank you for creating this thread and saving me a ton of money. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

    joyous971

By the way, I read in this thread that some of us Prius folks are selling you out to the dealers. I will not mention you or your website in communicating with them. Trust me.
