$7.15 at Oakland. It can't last; Hayward's at $5.80 and only 5 minutes away with a straight in to 27R. Rio Vista is the cheapest at $5.05. Never thought it would take a 2nd mortgage just to fly the pattern for an hour. :p

All good points, As well As Grumpy Cabbie. In Many cases our vast distances make it necessary to have a car. In my neck of the woods we have people commuting over 100 miles to work ( one way ) Others have 2-5 cars because they want them and can afford them, sometimes they need that many vehicles. There is probably no way to totally explain the differences between cultures, that is as to WHY? Whether it is transportation, manners, customs, work ethic. Etc. Every culture has redeeming values to be observed and even admired. Are Americans wasteful? NO, I do not think so, Are some spoiled? Absolutely! I am an American, so I am qualified to say that! :cheer2:

Not deliberately so I guess but you have so much opportunity to conserve without compromise - the Prius is a great example of people conserving and some members on here whose cars consist of a Prius and Ford Fiesta wouldn't be out of place in a European street, so conservation can be done. You also have many green projects that lead the world.

Yet sometimes market forces might need a little nudge in the right direction regarding fuel economy etc (as has recently been done I believe).

Equally it does seem mad that someone would drive a massive V8 to commute 100 miles to work and back yet they complain about the price of gas.

Re: Where is gas price headed? What are you paying?I

Just to add that the reason it was possible is the wealth, large amount of space and cheap energy for transportation and heating. That allowed people to have gas guzzlers, large houses and long commutes.

Cities grew, always with large lots on the edges and the urban sprawl pushes the middle incomes further and further from cities. With cheap petrol they could afford to do it but it quickly becomes crippling as petrol prices rise.

Even now the price might seem low to a European, but energy cost assumptions get built into the economy and a with low gas taxes the relative increase is greater and costs quickly become crippling. Now, there's a recession, most incomes are lower and there are more Americans trying to downsize their homes, commutes and cars. Still, people don't really want to give up those comforts and they still want to commute alone.

A colleague mentioned to me about two people who are thinking about changing jobs because of their long, expensive commutes. Both drive SUVs (not completely unreasonable given where they live). But they live in the same town and work at the same place yet don't pool.

Because they can. It's really as simple as that.

One of the great paradoxes of the USA is the combination of fervent patriotism and fervent individualism.

I paid a little over $5 a gallon recently, but that was on Beaver Island. Transporting fuel to the island adds a bit of cost.

Our politicians—Conservative and Liberal—are doing their best to change #1. And, maybe, #3.

I'm not crying. I pay six cents per kWh to "fuel up" my car. Call it around 2 cents per mile, though I'm far too disorganized to track my usage long term for a really accurate figure.

(Only an EV driver can be smug among Prius drivers. :D )

Think of all the environmental costs involved with creating the materials that go into an EV, and the habitat loss associated with road construction and use. And all the pollution from making electricity. Only a cyclist can be smug among EV drivers. :p

To paraphrase a quote from Scientific American many years ago, 'a person on a bicycle is more efficient at turning energy into motion than any other machine or animal.'

For the same input, cyclists can go further and faster than pedestrians. More miles per banana, in other words.

So no, cyclists are smugger than pedestrians. :p

I wouldn't be so sure. I once sat on a sofa and, fueled only by a bag of potato chips and a six pack, flexed one finger on an electronic transmitter device and instantly traveled a million light years across the galaxy to where no man had gone before. As I recall, that journey produced a gas surplus too.
