I actually had the same crack in my 2008 Prius recently and took it to the dealer with 32K miles on it and they took pictures and sent them to a Toyota rep. Toyota calimed it was "normal wear and tear" and it was not fixed or replaced by them.. sooooo what did I do yesterday.. traded it in for a 2011 Prius 3 with no leather.. wasn't going to make THAT mistake again.

So I took the car in for its regular maintained and asked about the crack. They told me it would be covered under warranty and ordered a whole new seat cover (bill said $500) which will be installed free of charge. Thank you bumper-to-bumper warranty!

Yup, that's vinyl, you can tell by looking at the split.

It's highly unlikely that the dealer will cover that, it looks like something cut/tore it.

An upholstery shop could either replace that vinyl panel or reinforce it from the back and do a cosmetic repair to hide the damage.

New factory leather upholstery for the seat bottom only is $267 list price.

Edit: Saw they covered it for you. You have a good relationship with your dealer.:cheer2:

Anyone having the same issue I am in the attached driver's-side photo? Side vinyl is cut from pinching against sharp plastic seat edge on 2010 V (with factory leather seat surfaces) purchased September 2009. Just from getting in/out of the car. Dealer says "normal wear and tear" but I'm not happy with the answer. Paid too much for this car to have this happen already!

I have a 2010 Prius (package IV) that's 23 months new with 17,700miles. Just noticed one 3mm tear and three 1mm tears above the seat riser as others have noticed. They're close to each other in somewhat of a straight line as others have noticed. The 3mm tear looks straight from afar, but is not up close. The other tears are too small to see how perfectly straight they are. I'm 105lbs, so my seat probably compresses less than the average person does. It does compress some. I'm also short, so the riser is at its highest. The first Toyota person I spoke to knew exactly where the tears would be. Hmmm... I only mentioned tears in my leather seat. I didn't mention which seat and where. That person brought out another person who insisted it was due to a puncture. Even though I'm short, I can't reach that area with an object to make 4 horizontal punctures. It would be an usual object. I've never brought an usual object to the driver seat. Like most, I store items in the trunk and back seat before I go to the driver seat. I open my driver door with my keyless key, because it's a keyless entry. I don't hold anything in my hands. House keys are placed into my purse before I walk to my car. It's the way I do it so I don't lose my keys. I take my purse off my shoulders and place it inside. The purse sits under my armpit, so it never reaches below my waist or near the side of the driver seat. I'm always wearing jeans with no belt or accessories, so nothing on my clothing is in contact with the side of the seat. I'm the only one driving the car, so the seat is not being adjusted. I was told it's wear and tear, which is not cover under warranty. Wear and tear after 23 months of a new car at 17,700miles. From an owner who's neat and particular. That second Toyota person, who was asked to have a look, acted as if I was being dishonest and trying to take advantage of Toyota. I know other companies have issues, but I’d take my money elsewhere and try another company for my next car. I didn’t like the sales, maintenance services or this experience. I'm also an honest person who will deal with unforeseen issues as long as they're taken care of.

Does anyone feel like answering? Is this leather put on in Japan or a dealer option?

A 2010 IV has factory leather. It seems the vinyl isn't holding up well. I'll have to check mine as mine's coming up to the end of the warranty.

Hmm, good thing this thread resurfaced. I did check mine today and it has a tiny little crack/tear on the vinyl piece all the way at the base of the seat side. (similar position to the right-most tear in the picture on Post #5). It's super tiny which is why I never noticed it and also it wasn't in an obvious place. No idea what caused it but I'll definitely take it in before the warranty is up. Thanks for bringing this up guys!

P.S. Ironically I chose the package with leather to avoid the wear & tear that I saw on the cloth in our 2005.
