2012 Prius Plug-In official photos released

    The day is finally here. Toyota has finally released photos of the 2012 Prius Plug-In, complete with a snazzy new front end, very snazzy new tail lights, and a re-postioned plug position. These photos are from Toyota GB, so some of these features could only be for the European or Japanese markets. We should have photos of the US model soon. The gallery has now been updated with all of the US model photos provided by Toyota. Check out all of the photos below in our 2012 Prius Plug-In gallery.     With EV-City mode selected, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid matches the EV mode’s characteristics. Increased electric operation is ensured by allowing more forceful use of the throttle before the petrol engine kicks in.

    I'd imagine the avoid button would let you set your route to avoid certain routes/sections/streets but that's just a guess...

    I understand that the European versions will have an user selectable option to hold the EV only function until such time as you enter a low emission zone or inner city.

    Ideal for setting off in the suburbs, driving along the motorway and then as you enter the city (where emission free driving is really needed) you select EV and drive for the remainder of your journey with zero emssions.

    I'm pretty sure the UK requires this option to enable the car to be eligible for the £5,000 EV grant. I also believe the UK Volt/Ampera also gets this option. http://www.chevrolet.co.uk/cars/volt/ Check half way down under 'Four different driving modes'.

    Interesting that the production PHEV is only 50kg heavier (110lb) than the std Prius. I seem to remember that the proto PHEV was 300lbs heavier. Odd that the PHEV 0 to 62 is 10.7s. With the PHEV only being 110lbs heavier, you would think that it wouldn't have lost almost an entire second in acceleration as compared to the standard Prius.

    No mention of whether the PHEV has a spare tire - or did I miss it. Maybe the smaller weight delta required the sacrifice of the spare?

    Can't say that the mid cycle refresh improved the looks - but possibly they helped with fuel efficiency. So as usual - few will be buying the car for it's "aggressive stance". Oh well - maybe the C in it's final config will be a little more mean looking.

    So, the plug-in port is going to be in the right rear quarter. It should be interesting pulling into a gas station.

    Perhaps the computer has been reprogrammed to make the HSD more efficient and also allow the PHEV electric motors to contribute more power during acceleration versus the non-PHEV:

    Hmmm? So it appears that the Toyota engineers may have intentionally made the new Prius both uglier and slower

    Just like the regular Prius, the gasoline door is on the driver's side. Nothing will be different at the gas station. Unless, you try to put gasoline into the electric port :(

    oh wait. I misread your comment the first time. :D
    I thought you meant the plug-in accelerated 0-60 faster than the regular Prius. Other way around.

    You might also want to take note that the regular Prius has a "Power Mode" button, which is absent on the Plug-in Prius:

    I don't really understand the difference between city EV and EV mode? does city EV allow for more throttle before the ICE is started? :s

    One is 0-100km/h the other is 0-60 mph, but it may be a touch slower than our standard genIII. We don't know yet so I would not assume its slower..


    The demos didn't have them either. Its because the battery took up space.

    I like the way the new way Prius's look...and as for being a tad slower, I don't think two thirds of a second is all the important when when needs some speed on the highway!

    I don't get those big wide grills that make cars look a catfish in full bottom feed scoop mode [​IMG] Cars need less cooling air than they used to, not more. I guess they will help increase pipe insulation sales to the high MPG modders.

    EV mode (HV<->EV Button) has smaller threshold when the ICE kicks in than EV City mode.

    It said the EV-City mode matches EV mode's characteristic so I think the EV power threshold is the same.

    The difference may just be the pedal mapping because it said "Increased electric operation is ensured by allowing more forceful use of the throttle before the petrol engine kicks in."

    If you meant the pedal threshold, I agree with you.

    I like the changes in the front and back. The taillights look like JDM version and it has the illusion to appear smaller.

    0-62 mph is 10.7 seconds vs. 10.4 seconds. It is probably within error of measurement. :D

    0-62 mph is 0-100kph. As the UK is officially metric then such data is usually measured as such but converted to mph for everyone to understand. I'm sure the US 0-60 mph time will be ever so slightly quicker than our 0-62.

    Anyhow, maybe you'll get the Power button at the expense of the EV City button? You all like to go quick and we have the city center low emission zones all over the place.
