Are you referring to the Prius Plug-In Advanced? B/c 8K of destination charges doesn't make sense.

 

The standard trim is as well equipped as a fully loaded Volt. If you subtract the tax credit, OP is off by $10k.

I know we are comparing midsize to compact.

 

There will be $780 shipping cost added as well as sales tax! Even with the $2500 tax credit the final shipping costs will be over $31,000. I was wrong too even though the japanese car magazines were printing a starting price for the plugin at $28,000 to $34,000 and those prices were much to low. I don't think the final price was settled until just a few week ago...

I will just be able afford the monthly car payments of about $450 and that is after putting $8000 down. yikes

I don't know if I agree, advanced has:
Autodimming rear mirror w/ homelink transceiver
Heated seats
Hard drive for the infotainment system


Loaded volt's got all that.

The only things I see over a loaded volt on the advanced is:
Power driver's seat adjustment
dynamic cruise control

Is Softex like leather or would leather still be extra?

Basically I'd put a loaded volt somewhere between the base and advanced model. Which is appropriate since thats where its priced after tax credits.

 

This was my prediction back in June. Can't clearly figure out the similarly featured Prius - since there isn't one. AFAIK, PIP is somewhere between P2 & P4.

PIP : 32,000 (or 29.5K after tax cr)
Prius 2 : 23,520
Prius 4 : 27,320

Before Tax Credit, PIP is 9K above Prius 2 and 5K above Prius 4. After Tax Credit, PIP is 6.5K above Prius 2 and 2.5K above Prius 4.

Overall, I'd say PIP is about 2K above my expectation.

 

Heated seats is in the standard trim of the Prius Plug-in as well.

Same here. They said they were pricing it without looking at the rebates, but it looks like they priced it using the rebates in their favor.

 

I think Toyota and dealers will let demand decide the street price.

They haven't had the greatest year this year and I'm sure they need something to bring in buyers big-time. Not unlike how a lot of Volt buyers end up buying a Cruze Eco, perhaps this will generate another wave of buyers for the Prius and Camry if they can't afford the plug-in premium.

Once the intitial buzz wears off and supply evens out, then you'll start to see deals below sticker, deals without pricey add-ons, lease bargains, etc. Pretty much the same with every hot seller from any brand. Dealers are gonna milk it for all they can unless Toyota implements something new after the pre-orders are delivered. If you're looking for a deal, wait till the end of 2012 at the earliest;-)

 

At the end of 2012 the EV picture should also look a lot better, in theory the Tesla Model S should be shipping (it's pricey but the high end 300 mile pack is close to a standard cars range), the Ford Focus EV should be shipping, and the 2013 Leafs will be out. I do think waiting might be the right thing to do for many of us, if your car isn't in dire need of being replaced.

 

I'm looking forward to Ford Energi - I think it will suit us better than PIP. But who knows how well Ford will execute on their strategy. Focus EV seems to be delayed and recent reports say the demo model they brought to an event wasn't working (and even used velcro to keep some parts in place).

 

We had a car in dire need of replacement (or major repairs) at the end of cash for clunkers. As some may remember, there was no mercy for green buyers then. Dealers were raking people as much as they could for Prius, often over MSRP and adding the usual games like paint protection and rust proofiing to every one on the lot. We had to drive to a Carmax new Toyota dealer across the border in Wisconsin to get their last Prius they had for $500 under sticker and that was a steal at the time. Had we been able to wait until the end of 2010, they were selling for much less.

 

Technically, you ARE wrong. You can get the base PiP for $32,000, minus the $2,500 Federal Tax credit, so $29,500 cost.

Yes, it doesn't have ALL of the features of the pricey high end model, but it has the most important one: 15 miles of EV range.

Let us know when GM/Chevy has an entry level Volt

 

The Prius web site shows $39,525 for the "Prius Plug-in Hybrid Advanced" model, $32,000 for the "Prius Plug-in Hybrid." Upgrades in the "Advanced" model appears to be primarily in the electronics - the Advanced model has a

• "HDD" (I would project that means hard-disk-drive) navigation system with "dynamic radar cruise control"
  Larger display (7" vice 6.1")
  More speakers
  More choices in driver's power seat (8 versus 6)
  Apps for monitoring and controlling charging the lithium-ion battery pack.

There are also some interior trim differences - the Advanced has
Softex (lighter and more environmentally friendly than leather) seats and steering wheel wrap.

Of course the "lesser" $32,000 model is no slouch - still has navigation and Bluetooth, etc.

 

The entry for after tax credit volt is $32,500. $3,000 premium for significantly better EV range isn't that unreasonable.
