Yep, I went to EZ Pass today and they confirmed that us "down-staters" would not be issued the new Green EZ Pass yet. What a wasted trip... 8-(

I just spoke to a rep at NYS EZ-Pass:

Not only is the discount ONLY for the NYS Thruway, BUT the GreenPass only works on the NYS Thruway, not anywhere else... (I did ask her SEVERAL TIMES about this... and she was insisting it was true) So... You will need 2 EZ-Passes. One for the NYS Thruway, and one for everywhere else... Not worth the 10% discount if you ask me.

Does anybody know if upstate New Yorkers can apply for an HOV green pass? It doesn't seem fair if they can...

One question... Anyone could get the NYS Thruway E-Zpass. Why couldn't you give up the one for there & get the Green Pass. Is there some discount associated with those passes? Like a commuter plan? I know there was a discount when I used to do the Tappan Zee.

In order to obtain a green ezpass you have to reside in a specific zip pre-approved code. No others are eligible.

That sucks; I like to use my "green" car all over the New York State. It should be like the season pass to the NYS parks, these are good anywhere in New York ;)
But grunting in here doesn't do any good, Mr Congressmen...Hello oo

I would like to point out something here. I have noticed that with this cool new "Green Pass" you get a 10% discount in only NY on the Thruway. Also, this green pass is of course, only available on hybrid cars, which are all considered passenger cars.

With the "standard" passenger E-Z Pass tag, you already receive a 10% discount, as stated here. Therefore, other then to sport off that you are elligable (sp) for a "Green Pass" you really aren't saving any more money then the gas guzzling passenger cars on the Thruway.

If I somehow missed something about all this, let me know. Maybe its a total of 20% off, but I found no evidence of this.

I have the MA Fastlane pass which also works with EZ-pass. I got mine when they charged only for the transponder. I did have to get a new transponder when the battery died and managed to get it before they started charging for the replacement. I have been getting 50% off all tolls with it. Definitely one of my better investments :D There is talk about reducing the discount or eliminating it entirely, either way mine has paid for itself many times at this point in time both in time saved at the tolls and money saved.

I've had an EZ-Pass for several years (I got it through the NY Thruway website), and I have neve paid a monthly fee nor for the tags.
I just got a Green EZ-Pass. I would not have bothered had I known in advance that it can ONLY be used on the NY Thruway. I make several trips to NJ each year, so I can use the green pass for the Tappan Zee bridge, but then to go on the NJ Turnpike or GS Parkway I'd have to switch passes. Defeats the convenience factor.
However, the woman that I spoke to at the NY Turnpike authority said that the other roads are "working on" getting acceptance for the green EZ-Pass.

I live just over the city line in Westchester County. Heard about the Green Pass discount, went to EZ Pass office in Whitestone, Queens. The clerk said I was the first to apply for a Green Pass (this was early May), and she didn't know what to do. She called her supervisor, and together they read the latest bulletins. They had me show my registration, and EZ Pass. They also had me write a letter of formal application right there. I have two passes (you can have up to 4 w/o charge). They "activated" one, and told me to use only that (white) one on the Prius. I knew nothing about a "Green Pass", until one arrived in the mail about 2 weeks later. I've been happily using it all over the metro area, so I don't know what this business is of "Thruway only".

I'm taking a trip to New Jersey next week. I use EZ-Pass on the Tappan Zee bridge, NJ Turnpike, and GS Parkway. I'll leave my Green EZ-Pass on and see if it works.

[/b]I tried to apply for the Green-Pass some time ago however I was told that you will only get 10%off very specific highways and since my commute didn't include those highways it wasn't worth getting. Can someone clarify? I travel the LIE to NYC every day!

It's only good for an extra 10% discount on the NY Thruway. The regular EZ-pass gets you 10% off, the NY Thruway tolls, so the green would get you 20%. You would get the same discount as a normal EZ-Pass if you use it anywhere else.

So if you don't already have an EZ-pass, get one to save some money and time. But if you already have one, then it's probably not worth the effort to get a green EZ-pass unless you regularly take the thruway.

I know a lot people put their EZ-Pass in the upper glove compartment and it works from there. I'm assuming that they made the 'Green Pass' colored green for a reason (so that it's easily visible that you're using one) so I'm wondering if I'll run into any problems if I go with the upper glove compartment installation for my Green Pass. Anyone keep their green pass in the glove compartment (even when driving through tolls?) If so, has anyone given you any problems?

My wife and I both keep our Green Pass EZPass transponders in the upper glove box (hers a 2008, mine a 2010), and have not had a problem.

When you drive through the EZPass toll lanes there's no one there to see your tag anyway (we don't drive through staffed booths since there's always non-staffed EZPass lanes on the roads we drive).
