A poster recently mentioned a better auto insurance company that he was going to, so I happened to bring up the company and up pops a "Consumeraffairs.com website that had some truly horrible stories of how both Liberty Insurees and claimants were treated, cheated, lied to, stalled, finagled, etc. Has anybody ever had any good experiences with this company?

Been with them for 57 years and had nothing but great experiences and good support. From a side swiped 2010 Prius, to a scrunched CRX and a front end mess with a Chevvy 2 . Paid off easily and quickly. Maybe 20 cars and 7 houses insured with zero problems and good rates.

any company of any substantial size is going to have complaints, you have to look at what the complaints are, and the number of them compared to the number of customers.

I personally use Geico and am happy with them.

bad experience with Liberty mutual on a workman's comp claim

Ive had Liberty Mutual for home and auto since 1991. They have been a pleasure to work with, especially with my teenage son's three accidents, all of which were his fault.

As someone who was on the receiving end of a 100% at fault teenager plowing into us in a side impact + rollover + gas tank puncture, please don't let your child drive until he can afford to and be responsible enough to pay for his own car and insurance.

I have nothing to say about Liberty since I've never used them, but I can say I wouldn't trust Consumeraffairs.com (it's basically run by a bunch of ambulance chasers) if my life depended on it. ESPECIALLY if my life depended on it.

I wouldn't be in a Prius right now if it weren't for Liberty Mutual. I was driving a Nissan and got rear ended by a hot rodding teen/20something with no insurance.

Turns out their uninsured motorist insurance has even better benefits than the collision insurance. I remember getting a rental car and them paying the vast majority of the cost.

Liberty Mutual wrote me a check very close to the price of what I paid for the Nissan minus my deductible (within $1000 of what I thought would have asked for). Got the check within a couple of weeks of the accident.

I was lucky that this happened during the unintended acceleration scare and got a Prius for barely more than the Nissan it replaced. Since then the price of a used Prius has skyrocketed but for at least the 3 months around my accident you could get one very cheap.

I had Progressive for quite a few years. The reason they call themselves "Progressive" is that their rate progress upwards every 6 months.
I got a quote from Liberty Mutual, and ended up saving 40% over what I was paying Progressive. That was a significant chunk of change. My wife and I did go to driving school, but Liberty Mutual provided it.
I did have one claim where a deer hit me. (When it's a side impact, they did the hitting.) They did want to cut corners on a few parts, but when I complained, they paid the difference. They did try and "steer" me to one of their preferred providers, but I had someone else I trusted, so used him with no problem.

    Other good things about Liberty.
Unless it's a newer car, they don't require pictures, so if I change cars often with used vehicles, I don't have to drive to the office like I did with Progressive.

When I first signed with them, my Prius was new and did need pictures, the sales lady who wrote me came to my house for the pictures. That was 20 miles for her.

They did try and get me recently to bundle, my homeowners insurance with them. But they could not offer me any significant savings over what I was paying to do so.

I've always shopped around for insurance if there was more than a small jump in my premium. I'm currently with Travelers and no one has come close to what I pay in insurance premium. I also have them for home owners, and when I was broken into almost 2 yrs ago, was treated well and they were quick. Others I've had were State Farm (until my agent retired about 4 years ago), AAA (went through Keystone), and Progressive (motorcycle, still with them).

I just shopped my motorcycle insurance, and got it cheaper through a different agent but same insurance company. Sometimes shopping local agents can help, as mine mentioned something that you can choose the level of comission which can adjust the policy amounts. Supposedly, they choose the lowest as they've been in business for many years and have a solid clientel. It can also be good to get a local agent, as you can develop a relationship through them, and they should be more aware of the local regulations and requirements.

Sometimes it's about proper coverage, and getting a good rep on the other end of the phone if you ever have to use your insurance (something none of us ever wants to do).

I was on the receiving end of an at fault Liberty Mutual customer. Pulled out in front of me about 10 feet away on wet pavement. I hit him broadside. His fault completely according to police and witnesses. Liberty Mutual tried(unsuccessfully) to give 10% of the fault and instead of paying the value for my car, they tried to deduct the salvage value plus 10% and make me handle getting it salvaged. They are total jerks when dealing with people who aren't insured by them. My insurance company had to cover it and go after them to pay the total amount. I did NOT get 10% of the fault, and they did have to pay out what they should have in the first place. Needless to say, I would never recommend Liberty Mutual. Sorry for the rant, but just wait until any of you have to deal with someone who is their customer and at fault.

I have been using them for past 3 years and so far so good...the rates are great, almost 30-40% off from MetLife so I am happy...

I look at insurance this way: every company is going to have complaints and try not to pay up. That is the way all of them do business. Expect not to have to have a claim. Just get the most coverage for the least amount of money. Period.

As you can read, the experiences with the same company yield widely differing opinions. How will YOUR experience be? Who knows. I shop for insurance at every renewal. I have used Nationwide, AIG, State Farm, Travellers, and Geico. Geico seems to offer the best rates and almost every renewal my rates have gone down. But I wouldn't worry about service and hassle before you actually experience it; if you do actually have a claim and have a problems, then vote with your wallet and get a new Insurance company.
