A mechanic friend of mine (using the term friend loosely) made a remark under my Facebook post about my new car that he "couldn't wait for me to have to replace the headlights". My car is a 2011 and I heard there was a class action lawsuit about the 2006-2009 but I don't know if it's still an issue with my model. So need a snarky or know-it-all response to this. Any tips?

The issue was with HID headlights (on the package 5 and 6's) of the Gen II Prius.

The current Gen III prius (2010 and 2011) don't have HID's. They only have halogen's (Packages 2 - 4) and LED's (package 5). Toyota went away from HID's because they were too problematic.

My brother and I were discussing this last night. He drives a Mazda Protoge, and guess what....the one's with HID's eat up their headlights to the tune of 1 per year (or expect to replace both every 2 years).

    Not just a Toyota problem.

Use the bolded part. It isn't very snarky, but if you want to spice it up, like

Hey you dolt! <insert bold text here>. Do your homework next time before you open your pie hole.

Don't make me have an incident of "unintended acceleration" next time I see you crossing the street.

There wasn't much of an issue with earlier 2G HID headlights. For example my 2004 has 125K+ miles and the HID bulbs are original and still working fine.

How about "headlights? They will burn out about the same time you will need a complete brake overhaul" or " thank you - But, I wish you would check your facts before giving advise" or "I'M saving $100 a month on gas - I won't sweat the small stuff".

Yep, it was on HIDs on 06-09 Priuses. Toyota Prius HID Headlight Class Action Settlement - Consumer Class Action Attorneys - Girard Gibbs LLP is the class action lawsuit. I had to replace one HID on my 06 a bit past the 5 years/50K mile warranty extension that the settlement granted.

HIDs no longer became available standard or as an option starting with the 2010 model year. One can only speculate as to why Toyota ditched them but the choices became halogen or LED based.

FWIW, in Japan, some drivers turn off their headlights when stopped at traffic lights, apparently, out of politeness to the drivers on the other side of the road. That cycling is esp. bad for HIDs... so maybe Toyota wanted to go w/only 2 headlight systems (vs. 3) and do away a type that doesn't like cycling.

Yep, re: Patrick's response. The 04-05 Priuses w/different bulbs and ballast than 06-09 models seemed to last longer. See http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...ius-owners-w-hids-how-long-did-they-last.html.

    Your problem is obvious.

Post the link of Caroline pulling out a HID bulb in 1 minute -- then say, They changed the design back to a regular bulb, so it is easy. But on the older ones, I bet you can't do it as fast as SHE does with your big meathook hands!

    Why not just ignore him?
It's pretty obvious that you're not going to convert him on the subject, and the Prius community is already somewhat well known for being kinda thin-skinned about the car.
They have a saying in the US Naval Academy. Probably elsewhere as well:
"Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it."

Leave the snarky remarks for the folks in the shallow end of the gene pool. ;)

Or you could thank him - if the worst thing that he could say about the Prius was the headlights on a few of the older models had problems (that have since been addressed) then he must think it is a pretty great car.

His comment wasn't all that bad. In fact, it stems from truth. It's about headlights, pretty tame. He is just misinformed about which model years suffered from the problem.

Oh, if only we could get people here to be so kind.....especially those with SUV's or Pickup trucks. Not even mentioning fog lights.....why do we need them on all the time, in the city, with city street lights.

I only heard of the Japanese headlight cycling because my 02 Maxima w/standard HIDs had a warning in the manual to not turn them on/off unnecessarily, such as at traffic lights. I later either looked around and asked around about this, which is when I heard about the habit.

On my trip to Japan that followed the above discovery, sure enough, I'd see many drivers in Tokyo do just that. Weird.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I did what you said and it's been nice and quiet on FB. I'm already getting a ton of flack from the family about this purchase (what about the battery? you know the battery is bad for the environment, right? you know you will never drive enough to pay for the difference in price?) so to have a "friend" say something on FB was pretty annoying. Especially, since he's a mechanic and I was at a loss for a informed response. In regards to the family, the brother that is the biggest ANTI-Prius is getting a visit from me today in my brand new car complete with horn honking and light flashing. He had already said I would never be allowed to park it anywhere near his house so this will be extra fun tonight. Wish me luck :) HATERS ALWAYS HATE

Good luck - but it is a bit sad that you feel the need for luck when visiting your brother.

When people have a response to the "payback period" for their upgrades from the stock vehicle, such as

    Bigger Engine
    Larger tires
    Leather interior
    Upgraded Stereo
    Moon Roof

Then and only then should you have to explain anything about a "payback period" for your Prius.

Give 'em the same answer they give you.....because it was my money and I got what I wanted.
