I use synthetic oil and I have 112,000 miles on my 01. Synthetic Oil is better for the environment and better on your engine. I use Amsoil myself. Plus you usually can get more miles between oil changes when you use synthetic

I would stick with what u have been using. Synthetic oil tend to run a bit thinner than conventional and with that many miles u might end up with oil leaks that u have not had in the past. If you had less miles 30 to 40 thousand then yes...but with 170000 and no problems I don't see the benefit

The only issues I see regarding switching to syn oil are:
    - Intermediate oil filter change (2k after switching), to avoid sludges build up (syn is normally more detergent, and dilutes aged waxes)
    - Watch oil level regularly
You can benefit of larger intervals, but no dealer can subscribe that, you are on your own.
