Yes, Another Warranty Dilemma

Just made purchase and I included the Platinum Toyota Care Extended Warranty. The cost was $1,000 for 60/100,000.

When I look over the paperwork a few days later I am realizing that maybe the extended warranty is not worth the additional money.

    The thoughts:

Out of the box everyone who buys a Prius gets: (mo/mi)
    Basic Limited Warranty: 36/36k
    Hybrid System: 96/100k
    Powertrain: 60/60k
    Restraint Systems: 60/60k
    Corrosion Perforation: 60/999k

Since I live in New Jersey I also get the following Emission Control Warranty: (mo/mi)
    Performance: 180/150k
    Defect: 180/150k
    Hybrid Battery: 120/150k

My dealership also added on an additional Lifetime Powertrain Warranty so long as I service the car through them. Their warranty is at no charge to the customer, no time limit or mileage limit, and no maximum number of claims or claims dollar amount. The warranty includes:

Engine: cylinder block and head and all internal parts, intake manifold, timing gears and gaskets, timing chain/belt and cover, flywheel, valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, engine mounts, turbocharger housing and all internal parts, supercharger housing and all internal parts, engine control computer, water pump, fuel pump, seals and gaskets

Transmission & Transaxel: case and all internal parts, torque converter, clutch cover, transmission mounts, transfer case and all internal parts, engine control computer, seals and gaskets

Front Wheel Drive System: Final drive housing and all internal parts, propeller shaft, u-joints, axle shaft, drive shaft, bearings, supports, seals and gaskets

Rear Wheel Drive System: axle housing and all internal parts, propeller shaft, u-joints, axle shaft, drive shaft, bearings, supports, seals and gaskets

Now I know that not everything above is in the Prius, but I wanted to list out everything so others can compare if their dealer offers this sort of incentive.

With all this being said, I originally purchased the extended warranty because of concerns of it being a hybrid and concerns of all the additional technology the ATP brings.

So that's my dilemma, is the additional $1000 worth it for the next 100,000 miles when I already have emission control performance/defect, hybrid battery, hybrid system, and powertrain covered during those 100k miles and beyond?

I'm siding on "No." - What's your opinion?

    Thanks in advance,
    y.

I think you are heading in the right direction, save the $1,000, the odds are with you.......

Thanks Gurple. I am thinking, what can go wrong that would cost that much to replace - and what is the chances of that happening?

I just can't seem to think of anything. My only worry is the hybrid system, but after over 10 years of manufacturing these systems I'd imagine that Toyota's system is solid.

One thing to consider is how long/miles do you normally keep a vehicle, and how long/miles do you "really" think you might keep this one, before the next upgrade. Just a thought.

Historically I trade off around 75k. As of right now I want to keep the Prius in the family until its dead. I've been considering complementing it with a pure EV car in the next three years using the EV for short trips and the Prius for longer ones. However, as time and technology changes, I may end up trading it off for a vehicle if future models become far more superior in it's fuel efficiency, and forgo the EV. Only time will tell if that's an option, but I'm doubtful that such a car will surface in the next three years.

The question in my mind: are you able to get a refund for the extended warranty? There are cooling-off regulations, but: the sooner you talk to them the better. (Have to laugh: tryiing to type "better", I typed "bettery").

One phase of our purchase was a visit to a little room where a lady really tried to sell us on this sort of thing. It's a significant factor in their profit margin, I think.

The car is only a week old. I believe I have at least 30 days to cancel and only occur a $25 paperwork fee.

No doubt there are profits to be made in the finance room, these extended warranties, insurances, and service plans are all part of their profit margin.

When I walked out of a Ford finance room before, they said it was the first time someone was walking out on a deal in the finance room. By the expression of his face, I don't think he was lying. 30 minutes later I got a call with the interest rate I wanted. Funny how it all works.

I only wish there were "honest" dealers. Truly honest. I know they need to make a buck, support the building, employees, electric, make commission, etc. But some of their tactics are just plan wrong and border immoral. When I find such a dealership they will have my business for life.

$1k will get you a 7/100k Extra Care Platinum policy from our site sponsor.

There are many items that will not be covered after 36k, that ext warranty can cover for you. Hubs, brake actuators, water pumps (after 60k), transmissions (after 60k).

Ext warranties are basically insurance policies. Buy them if you cannot afford to self insure. Statistically you will not win.

The dilemma I have is that I think my dealerships additional warranty will cover most of the more expensive repairs that could occur.

I have one of those lifetime powertrain warranties on our Altima but I still opted to purchase a Nissan Gold Preferred policy. Those 3rd party warranties, ours was backed by Fidelity, make no promise to use new parts for repair (equivalent is what they advertise iirc). Plus the labor time they pay (again IIRC) is significantly less than what the dealer 's rate is. And claims will be difficult since they may use the wear and tear exclusion on you. I'll double check the next time im at my parent's house but my recollection was that it was not a policy to rely on. I got ours free though.

Edit-- ours did not have a clause requiring dealer service. However, if yours does, check if they require you to purchase all the "extra" services that are not needed to maintain the wty. If so not worth it.

Some of those lifetime drivetrain warranties issued by dealers require that all services be done through them, right down to tire rotation. Add up all services and you will more than pay for the "free" warranty. Most chain tire stores and Costco will rotate and balance the tires purchased from them at no charge.
I bought the extended warranty (Toyota Platinum 6yr/100K mi) and in 5 1/2 years, 55K have not had a single warranty claim of any type. They won this round. :)

No need to tie up your money before 36000 miles or 3 years. The warranty costs the same at any time before either of those are reached and can be bought online for much less. You may not have the car until then due to selling or hopefully not an accident, so why buy now? Put your money away for now.

Also keep in mind that those 'dealer lifetime warranties' have about a million exclusions in them. They want you to do THEIR maintenance schedule, which is most likely WAY MORE than Toyota's schedule. THink $500 30K services, $800 60K services and the like. Where Toyota's 30 and 60 are oil change, filter, air filters and tire rotate. I'd ask if having the car serviced there allows you to go by TOYOTA's maintenance schedule alone, and if not ... what is the cost of the 30's from the dealer.

Personally ... I'd do neither. I'd service according to Toyota maintenance, AND I'd get a refund on the extended warranty. Also, keep in mind that if you cancel the extended warranty and you financed it ... that they'll probably just take it off the finance contract and most likely will NOT give you a check.

Prepare for a pretty serious fight ... stealers HATE to refund any money for ANYTHING ... especially a cash cow like an EW.

EIther way ... do it ASAP.

With the recent wave of lift gate strut failures and now the issue with the mounts, I am starting to reconsider this purchase.

Also, my call to Toyota Extra Care's claim # today had a claims rep give me a verbal confirmation that lift gate struts, front struts and rear shocks would be covered. My dealer agreed with this. Unfortunately, as an insurance underwriter myself, I would like to see this in the coverage form and I have not seen any literature from TFS that confirms this.

Get your $1000 back. You have 3 years/36K miles to decide if you want an extended warranty or not. If you decide you want one later get it through this site and save a couple of hundred dollars. email Troy here: [email protected]

I agree with your concerns about ATP failures and I bought an extended warranty for that reason but I waited until I had 35K miles on the car.

I have had no ATP related failures yet but now with hatch strut failures and motor mount problems I'm not sorry I have it.

I have 73,000 miles now and will have over 110,000 miles by the end of next year. I have had zero repairs. It is a Toyota, the most reliable car in the world. Save your money.

I'd like to hear from owner's who have bought the Toyota Extra Care warranty and used it. It would be great to compile a list of what they actually cover under the standard warranty versus the Extra Care. A Toyota may be reliable but they still break. Spend some time in a dealership shop and you will change your perspective fairly quickly.

You've been here long enough to know that problems posted on forums tend to be overly amplified and are not necessarily representative of typical or common problems. This would be true of any forum and "spending enough time in a dealership."

Spend enough time on a mac forum and you'd think the iMac you just purchased won't last a year.

Spend enough time on a hair loss forum and you'd think none of the treatments work and you'd go impotence in no time.

    And so forth.....
