Use the voice recognition button on the steering wheel and just say "MD" and it will immediately jump to the MD player (i.e. your iPod).

Yes, but aren't the iPod and the aux input both on MD? Don't you get silence from the aux input every other time?

I jammed mine directly behind the stereo head unit. There was JUST enough open space back there. Where did everyone else put it?

Thanks for putting together these great instructions! VAIS should seriously pay you a few hundred bucks for doing their job for them, much better than they did.

Too bad I didn't see your instructions until after I did my install. I didn't know you could take out the big white box of wires, so I ended up taking the whole display off and pulling the stereo head unit out of the dash! Oh well, now I know how to totally disassemble my dash...

With no CD in the HU, when Disc is selected, one time will be the iPod interface, and the next will be the aux input. With a CD in, it will select CD - iPod - CD - Aux - CD...

Up until a few days ago, I would use the mode button on the steering wheel and cycle through everything. This is much better!

What about the radio? If you alternately press FM and DISC, do you get FM - iPod - FM - Aux...? That's the main thing that's likely to bug me. I agree that if I have the iPod interface I usually won't be using CDs.

Eugene's e-mailed me to say that the Aux input can be disabled, but I have to specify this when ordering. Hmm.

    Hey All,
I am a new Prius owner (1 week) and am so grateful that this site is here! My question regarding this adapter, VAIS AIC-100i, is this: does this adapter enable you to recharge the iPod directly or do I need a car charger for the 40G iPod? Also does anyone know if I would be able to get the 06 mp3 enabled stereo installed in my 05 Prius?
    Thanks,
    Sharktoy

It will charge the iPod when the car is on.
Even if the radio from a 06 Prius would work, I think it would be very expensive.

Its works in the Netherlands and it works fine. It takes some time before it is shipped to you and it is somewhat expensive but it works great. So don't hesitate to give yourself a X-mas gift.

Mbarrows, thanks for the pictures -- they are appreciated. Comparing the new unit to my AIC-100i, it looks much more compact. (Not that that's an issue for me -- like you, I just keep it in my glove compartment.)

Sorry to hear about the confusion you had installing it. I am so grateful for the instructions Craig wrote -- seriously, VAIS should license them from him (or at least provide a pointer to PriusChat's VAIS installation thread).

I wrote a lengthy followup on my experiences installing the VAIS AIC-100i, and noted that the instructions from VAIS were wrong, too. Unfortunately, that article (and a number of other useful articles re: the VAIS) got lost in the great autumn PriusChat crash of 2005. :(

Hope you enjoy your VAIS unit as much as I enjoy mine!

Yup, I've been doing that too, Dave -- makes it very easy to use. (Particularly as I don't have a CD in the CD drive any longer.)

BTW, has anyone found out yet what improvements have been made in the revised firmware shipping with current VAIS units? I.e., what's there that might make it worthwhile for "original" VAIS owners to ship their units back for firmware updates (if VAIS offers firmware updates, which I'm unclear about)?
