Help with Nav DVD

    Hey folks,

    I am hoping for some quick input. I have a 2009 Prius that has been running the U33 ver 8.1 DVD since new. I bought a new dvd online and it is a U92 ver 10.1. When I load the disc and start the car it says it is unable to read the disc. I tested the disc at in the sellers 2011 prius and it worked no problems so I know the disc is good. They are both dual layer discs so what am I missing?


    Are gen 3 dvd's not compatible with gen 2? or is there a step I can take to get the disc to work?

    The bootloader and firmware load sections are different. You need to make a "hybrid" disk. Since you have both it should be easier, but still a PITA.

    Take the bootloader and all boot data from the "old" disk, and then all the map data from the new disk. Combine the binaries and burn as an image onto a DVD+R DL at a low speed.

    Okay, I think I can handle that. Would you happen to have any links with more detail on to make a hybrid disc?

    Not currently as I am away from my PC, but googling Toyota hybrid nav disk or something similar should work. Also substitute "Lexus" or "Denso" for "Toyota". The last time I did this was for a Gen4.1 nav disk with Gen 5 maps for a Lexus RX. Worked, but really painful and I am a CE/EE.

    The Gen III Prius have a Gen 6 Nav unit and requires the Gen 6 DVD. Your 2009 should be a Gen 5 Nav unit and requires the Gen 5 DVD.

    Any chance you can return the DVD to the online seller and replace it with the Gen 5 DVD? That seems to be the easiest way if possible.

    Before you do much else,
    Try unplugging the Nav unit, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in. This will force it to re-read the bootloader data.

    I found a walk through on another site that was helpful in outlining how to burn the disc properly.

    But it is for swapping the Loading.kwi file to an an override feature. Do you know the particular files I need to replace on the new disc with ones from my old disc? I guess we need to know which files will let the disc pass the nav systems test when checking the disc.

    Also has anyone here successfully used a burned navigation in a 2009 Prius? I am reading that the gen5 dvd drives have issues reading burned discs.

    I have a 2007 Prius (Gen 5) and was able to use burned DVDs with the older discs, so I don't think it's the drive. I think there's some sort of copy protection in the newer discs.

    Its possible the older firmware doesn't do the check, so a hybrid disc might work.

    Well I had an old iso laying around "464210-1741.iso" I tried burning this on Verbatim DL with the proper book type. It loaded initially but then switched to " Unable to read data Check if Map DVD is correct"

    Does this mean my drive is just not going to read burned discs?

    Well, it would've been the first successfully burned DVD for a gen 2 prius, if you keep at it and it works, bully for you and I'll buy a copy;)

    In addition to the proper book type, DL disk must have the proper Track Path: Parallel Track Path (PTP), burned discs have Opposite Track Path (OTP) and you can't change it. The solution is to split original disk in two single layer discs.
