Slightly related, Tustin Toyota charges $7.99 per quart for their Mobil-1. It costs ~$2 per quart at Kragen.

Here in Indiana we have a law that permits you to cancel any contract within 3 days.

If California also has such a law, you could just go back to the dealership and tell him you want to cancel the whole thing. At this point this would be preferable to getting a $2000 reduction on your Prius. Surely you could get a better deal on a Prius elsewhere.

It would certainly be worth looking into!

Unfortunately California has no cooling off period.

So then, Rush surely made a mistake, and a big one at that. That does not excuse the dealership. Maybe the dealership also simply made a mistake. Well, once he brings it to their attention, the ethical thing for them to do is to make it right. It's not like he filled in the wrong amount on a contract that he had written up, he just overlooked THEIR mistake. Maybe the finance department went to the salesman to see if his story checked out and the salesman lied. Or maybe the finance dept. simply didn't care to check. If so, they are unethical. And if you call rush stupid (I'm not, but it's been implied), Then you must call the dealership evil. Sounds extreme but evil is as evil does.
Also. if Rush's story is true, then why the heck would it not be the right thing to warn potential buyers of the hazards of doing business with this particular dealership. He would be remiss not to. I am a salesman in a different field and can tell you that a lot of business in this world is accomplished by word of mouth. And you reap what you sew. It's that simple!

Is it at all possible that the extended warranty cost you $2,000 which, when added to the agreed upon price of $27,999 came out to the $29,999? The finance guy is the one that talked you into the warranty. You didn't account for its price in your description?

The more you can take business away from unscrupulous dealers and redirect it to honest businesses the better. I have personally guided at least a dozen car buyers away from my hometown dealer and to his competitor. The hometown dealer doesn't even know this and never will. Nonetheless, I feel I have 'saved' these car buyers from a more unpleasant experience and instead had them support a deserving business. Furthermore, and most importantly, while any business (including my own) is in the business to make money, making profit at any cost is not and never was part of the game. Never support dishonest business practices!!! Simply redirect customers elsewhere. This keeps unscrupulous businesses from reaching their peak and discourages such practices.

I am amazed that people can react to the dealer's actions and blame it on the buyer.

Who were the witnesses to the negotiation? Your girlfriend? The sales manager? The salesman? I highly doubt it was only you and the salesman. Meaning this is not the classic he said she said. For them to deny the agreement, more than one would have to commit perjury. Take them to small claims court.

If it wasn't a mistake, it is blatant fraud. If you have evidence that you negotiated for two hours, their claim that they never come down in price on a Prius is unbelievable. Especially when the price was marked up so far over value in the first place.

The dealer knows what it did, because no one negotiates for two hours and forgets talking price. This is fraud and you should take every step to remedy your situation, including recession of the contract.

I'm not saying that you didn't mess up in not carefully reading the contract. But a dealer cannot knowingly slip in a price that was not agreed upon. If it was a mistake, it is a mutual mistake and should be rescinded.

Contact your attorney general's office (it probably has a consumer protection office). Also contact the BBB and DMV if they have an outlet for complaints. If the dealer is so confident in their price, they should be willing to take the car back and sell it to someone else. Part of capitalism is providing customer service that will sustain the business and its reputation.

If they are unwilling to do that, the correct response is to tell everyone you know and boycott the dealer.

Rush sorry you got scammed. you can cancel your extended warantee and then repurchase it here for MUCH less than 2 G's and if i were you, i would do it. afterall, its not like you owe the dealership any favors and that is exactly what you did by purchasing that warantee from them

    Hello Everyone,

Well I have had a very good turn of events happen recently. :D I was able to come to an agreement with Toyota of Huntington Beach. I am a proud owner of a 2006 Prius Classic Silver Metallic with Package #8 with tinted windows and chrome wheels. :D

I am very pleased with the way the dealer stepped up and addressed my concern. I would like to thank Dennis Prado & John C. Cable for all of the help they did to assist me.

I also want to thank priuschat.com and the people who gave me advice and responded to this message thread. I welcome all criticisms; it is the only way we can learn.

Looking forward to chatting with you in the future.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I think they force the buyer into dealer supplied extras, at least that was the policy a few weeks ago.

Is this the same outfit that had you pay $29,999 for a used Prius, with over 10,000 miles on the odometer, in the beginning of the month after they cheated you and added $2,000 to the price that you had agreed upon?

Ugg, still paid alot of money for the tint and wheels I bet. The tint I could live with but the wheels (unless he wanted them) is just a waste of at leat an extra grand. I personaly don't like dealer add-ons. I would have gone elsewhere.

I can maybe understand them rectifing the situation for you and going from being "Dealer Warning - Stay Away" to perhaps a "OK" status if they corrected their behavior. I can't see them going all the way to a "dealer to be recommended" on the Good Dealers thread.

You can't start ripping someone off and end up on my recommended dealer list.

The same thing happened to me. I went into by a Toyota Prius and was promised $4500.00 for my trade in and when the contract was drawn they only gave me $3500.00. I didn't notice the descrepancy until the next day. I called to complain and they said I could bring the car back. I did but the dealer had put my down payment of $5,000.00 through the bank. It has been a week and I'm still waiting for my money back. I have talked to 5 managers and they all keep giving me the run around. These people don't deserve to be in business. They are taking advantage of innocent people who don't even realize they have been ripped off until later and then they are no help when you need it. Please tell everyone you know not to shop at Toyota of Huntington Beach. Toyota of Huntington Beach 18881 Beach, Blvd, Huntionton Beach, Ca 92648.

The first Prius I came across looking to buy was on the platform in front of a Suzuki/Hundai dealership, a used Silver '05 with about 5,000 miles. I stopped to take a look, right away I didn't like the salesman, he had to give me the story that "it was traded in by an old man that couldn't adjust to the technology" yet he couldn't even turn it on, I had to do it for him. I came back to take a test drive and he just about ripped the front bumper off bringing it down from the platform. Then the salesman's boss tells me "I worked at a Toyota dealer and sold Prius's all the time, I think this one is about a package 7...". I did a lot of research and knew the packages well and the only noticeable feature was SKS so it probably wasn't any more than a package 3, and they only made 6 packages in '05. I had to ask several times how much they wanted for it before they finally said "we're looking to get about $28,000 for it..." and I was about to offer around $19,000, so I just shook their hands, turned around and walked out the door. A little more than two months later I was driving out of a TOYOTA dealer with my brand new '06 Magnetic Grey pkg 8 (probably one of the first few of it's color, delivered on May 5, 2006) and I actually talked them down to $27,3xx including floormats and rear bumper applique when I placed my order two months earlier, of course it took some careful negotiation.
