I have a regular key fob (i.e. not keyless entry type). I lost the spare fob, so wondering if the remote opening of door function using the fob can be disabled temporarily to allow time to look for key. want to disable it in case whoever that got the key will click around the parkiing lot to find my car and drive it away. I would use the valet (manual) key to open door for the time being. I know I can reprogram the key (which will cost $90 per dealer quote :-(, but trying to avoid this while keeping the car safe and giving some time in case the key "turns up". (Oh, btw, anyone knows how to reprogram it without having dealer do it? ) thanks.

Sorry Pal, That one's a dealer only type thing, at least so far as I know... I have only ever been able to program keys using a factory scan tool. I also know of no way to disable the keyless entry system short of disconnecting the 12v battery. That would also leave you with no way to start the car short of crawling into the trunk area to reconnect it.
Best option is to have that particular key electronically disabled.

Bear 68: This is only slightly off topic since it's about keys. Your tag says you're a Toyota master tech, so maybe you can help.

How do I disable the SKS? I'm following another thread that talks about a sequence of actions: Unlock car, open door, click unlock 2x, close open close open door, click unlock 2x, close open close door, hear double beep. It isn't working. Can you advise me?

    Thanks
    Mike

Hi mlbex Welcome aboard... If you hav a Gen II Prius, (04 -09) all you can do is press the SKS cancel button which is located below the steering wheel (look VERY low) This will cancel (shut off) the Smart Entry and Smart Start functions of the car. Be advised, the remote keyless entry (pressing the lcok or unlock buttons) will still function and the car can be started by inserting the key fob into the slot on the dash.

The only way to totally disable a key is to have it removed from the cars ECU. (Erased by way of a Techstream scantool)

    Hope this helps...

Since your info says you have a 2011, which would be a Gen 3, you should've either started a post in the Gen 3 area or replied to one there. Gen 3 is very different than Gen 2 and doesn't have the SKS disable button under the steering column.

Whoops! Nice catch cwerdna. I missed the car listing in his profile... Still, he could be asking about another car (Gen II). You are correct though that the Gen III does not have aprovision for disabling the SKS since there is no slot for the fob and the system relies on SKS only.
