I recently purchased a 2010 Prius for my taxi fleet. With my three 2008 Prius taxi's I would take the emergency key out and get about 10 keys cut for my drivers and hide the smart key in the taxi. With the 2010 the emergency key is different and Toyota wanted around $75 to send one off and get a copy and probably around $50 a key for any extras because there would not be shipping cost included on the extra keys. Toyota is charging $25 just for the blank but I heard you can get them for $10 but I have had no luck finding them probably because I am not sure what they call the emergency key that you use to get in the car when your battery is dead etc. I don't believe there is a locksmith in my city that can cut the new kind of key so I will have to send them somewhere to be cut. Any help or advice would be appreciated I live in Ontario.

    Thanks

I don't really understand why you want them. You get two key fobs with each car and each key fob has two mechanical keys.

If you want a hidden key take the mechanical key out of one of the fobs and hide it outside the car, then take that fob and put it in a metal container or remove its battery and hide it inside the car.

Then give the other fob with its mechanical key still inserted to the driver.

Check eBay (ebay.com) using the search words '2010 Prius key'. Prices for the blank keys range from $10 a piece to $59 for 10. Locksmiths with the technology to cut 'high security' keys can do the rest if you provide them with the key code on the aluminum tag supplied with your factory key.

Thanks Mad-dog that is very helpful.

Tumbleweed------ I have 10 drivers full and part time that drive my taxi's and at one time or another they end up driving all 4 during the year. It is much easier for me to cut about 10 door keys for all the taxi's and and that way all drivers have keys for all cars. For my 3 2008 Prius it was no problem just have a locksmith cut the keys but the new kind of key no one in my city can cut and they are very expensive if you order through the Toyota dealership.

OK now I get it. With all those drivers I imagine you have a few lost keys also. :)

I just purchased a 2010 and don't have the key code. Anyone know how I can get it to have a mechanical key cut?

Locksmiths can either duplicate your existing mechanical key, or cut one from your VIN number. If they don't have the equipment to cut a laser key, they generally know another locksmith who does have the equipment.

Any idea what a locksmith would charge to laser cut a key?

Local guy over here in Jersey charged around $10 or so. The really high price and fol-der-rol where the dealer wants to send the key off to California or something is just price primping: If the locksmith has the machine, it's just as easy to cut a "laser cut" key as any other kind.

He also charged around $40 to program the car to accept the key, which he did by hooking up his laptop to the car and running some specialized software. I believe I've heard reports that there's another guy over in Long Island who charges similar prices.

Just start going through the Locksmith section in your local yellow pages until you find a guy/gal who can do it.
