I hate my electric toaster. It's so damn slow. I call it the Slowster...

There is no way I can time a breakfast. It takes forever. I put two slices of bread in, lower the lever and the slices are lowered into a eternal slow burning hell, of seemingly magical torture inwhich the bread is exposed to burning elements but never seems to actually toast. After what seems to be a never ending purgatory the toaster will release the bread with a pop. Only to reveal the most disappointing lack of actual toasting.

Then...it becomes really evil. If I try to re-lower the bread for further toasting? It refuses to accept it's released victims. Holding for mere seconds before accending them back up to toastless freedom.

I have to let the toaster cool down for about 3 minutes before additional toasting will even be allowed.

So my conclusion? Because my experience with my toaster is so bad? I conclude that America Hates Electric Toasters! They are not the answer to crunchy warm bread that people expect. Infact? I recommend a Toaster Oven. Even if it is a Hummer like overkill for most toasting.

Perhaps I shall search the after Christmas sales for a $19.99 end to my constant battles with my Slowster?

But I would miss my AM battles with my ever ready nemesis.

I was poor for most of my life. Not destitute poor. I was never homeless, and the only times I went entirely without food were by choice (fasting a couple of times, and dieting). But I could not afford appliances. I saved up for a month to buy my first electric blender for $15.

    So...

I had a stove-top toaster. It was a sort of A-frame thing. You put two slices of bread on it and set it over a low flame on the stove (I had a gas stove at the time, I have no idea if it would work with an electric stove, but we're on an anti-electric kick here, aren't we?). After a bit you could flip the bread around so the outside was inside, in order to toast both sides.

It worked quite well. I recommend it for anyone who prefers not to use (or cannot afford) an electric toaster.

P.S. My electric toaster is too slow also, but the bread comes up toasted. I quit using the stove-top toaster once I could afford an electric one.

P.P.S. I also had a stove-top (or campfire) popcorn popper. I really liked it. It made the best popcorn, better than any electric popper, and didn't need any oil. It was a sort of wire cage on a long handle with a wooden grip. You shake the thing vigorously over a fire. Yum.

How do you like your toast? Medium-well here.
    Trying to be a good eco-minded PC'er, got a Kill-o-Watt for Xmas.
Just made one piece of toast for science, and it took 1300-watts for 2.5 minutes. Believe that's about $3 per year for etoast. Not sure how Daniel's A-frame fossil fuel method "stacks up", but it's ingenious.

We use one on our boat as well. It works great over an alcohol stove.

Once upon a time my sisters oven was a Coldspot, while her fridge was a Hotpoint.

Currently my dishwasher is a Whirlpool (which actually makes sense, in a way) while my microwave is a Frididaire , which doesn't make any sense. My oven is a Tappan, (no longer made) but it is just a matter of time before I get a Viking Range, I am surrounded by Viking employees.

America (would) really hate(s) battery powered toasters ... cause the battery craps out and cost $90 to replace.

Why can't you just eat a slice of bread?
Why kill the planet because you prefer to "have more fun" while you're eating???

Nutritionally speaking, you'll get just about the same value out of your slice of bread that you do with the toasted kind. Yeah, it's not as much fun, but why base the trip on how much fun you have in getting there.

    Damn Luddites!!!

Our gas stove is General Electric and it's crap, but so is our GE microwave/convection oven. At least their quality is consistent.

It's not about fun. It's about the culinary experience. The fine and subtle tones in the flavor of toast sit upon the palate like an expensive French wine or the best German ale. Life would be dull and uninteresting, hardly worth living, without the occasional exquisite slice of toast.

This has got to be a joke. 500mA at 5V is a measly 2.5W. You can't even toast a breadcrumb with that.

No, no, they use red LEDs. They are much more efficient.

According to Sting you lot only toast your bread on one side - is this true or just an urban myth?

No, we toast both. And Englishman complaining about American cooking is like a rapper complaining about an opera singer's singing.

On a completely different note (ha!), here is a (very, very old) toaster that came with my house:

What you do is put your bread in the slots, put it by the fire, and when half the slice(s) are toasted, rotate it 180 degrees (yes, it spins) and toast the other half.

I guess if you're toasting two slices at once, it would only get half toasted... hmm...
