Are some 2006 Prius models shipping w/OLD SCREEN?

We have a 2006 Prius on order for January delivery, package #7.

This weekend, I subscribed to techinfo.toyota.com and downloaded the official 2006 Owners Manual. (The site was fairly agressive about copyright, so I won't post the manual excerpts here.)

The owners manual is very careful to illustrate functions on _multiple_ display types. It appears that the new-style high resolution display is called both "Type I" and "Type II", and the OLD style, lower-resolution display is called "Type III".

Toyota may just be allowing themselves some elbow-room to move out some old display system inventory during the 2006 MY. For base model cars, the distinctions between the displays may not be that important. But for Nav-equipped cars, clearly the high resolution display is superior.

But, we don't want to risk getting stuck with the old display.

Can anyone confirm if Toyota is shipping old displays in 2006 models? If you order Nav, are you certain to get the new display? I have emailed our dealer to ask for clarification, and if I hear anything definitive I'll post it here.

Has anyone purchased a 2006 model and received the old display? (An easy way to tell the difference is that the old display has rectangular graphical buttons and the new ones are rendered as rounded. The old display has textured screen backgrounds and the new display has a black background.)

    Thanks,
    Bob R.

Guessing if you order nav you'll get the new screen, unless they're going to send you the old nav system as well.

    Bob,

I have been looking at the same manual you are, and I agree it is confusing. Especially since they never say which Type X screen maps to which option package. I have not looked at it recently, but I believe somehow I deduced that the '05 screen was only in the lowest package(s) (makes sense). I forget how I deduced that.

If you ordered a Nav-equipped car, then you'll definitely have the new display, in any case. Take a look at the Nav manual, NOT the basic car manual. There is only one screen shown in all documentation for the Nav. I also just picked up my #8, and I can verify that it has the higher-res screen. I think the only difference between it and the #7 you ordered is the leather vs. cloth seats.

    First, thanks for the replies...

I think I have answered my own question: Looking at pages 160 and 161 of the 2006 Owners manuals, there are 3 diagrams of the 3 types of displays. Only the "Type I" diagram includes the necessary hardware buttons adjacent to the display to invoke Navigation. Therefore, I am concluding that the Type I display comes with Navigation.

Further, it appears the Type II display (really the same as Type I except for buttons) is what you get with Bluetooth/Voice-Command enabled cars, and Type III is the most basic.

While I'm sure you've got the three types right, I've read elsewhere (currently searching for WHERE) that everything but the 'no package' prii get upgraded screens. Since I'm getting a package 4 (and bluetooth isn't available till package 5) I'd much rather believe that I'll get a higher res screen.

i'm also somewhat hopeful that the higher res screen would mean changes that would allow me to build a computer for MP3 and NAV uses, and have it look good and not use another screen.

i'd love to be pointed towards technical information regarding the new screens - i understand they've been used in some lexuses (lexi?) for some timenow

I can say that IF you have the backup cam you most definantly have the new screen. The old screen wouldn't have a high enough resolution for sure. However if you dont have the cam I suppose anything is possible??

I drove a 06 package 3 this weekend and the new screen looks great. I immediately noticed a difference. They did have a package 1 but did not see that screen to compare.

What are the pixel resolutions and physical dimensions of the various screens?

just for reference i just picked up an 06 package 6 and it has the high-res screen. this may be because of bluetooth or rear camera, but there you go.

Most cameras are NTSC outputs. You don't need a hi-res display for that. Our old displays run the cameras just fine. The problem comes from converting composite output of cameras to RGBS.

Actually I'm hoping this is true - it helps me believe I can yank a 06 unit and drop it in my 05.

I picked up my #2 earlier this month and it has the new hi-res screen.

My in-laws picked up their absolute base model this morning and it has the old screen

I assume that the addition of the backup camera (which comes on every car except the base and the #1) is the reason for having the new screen.
