My wife says the $43526.34 was the price (including taxes - around 4.35%, the extended warranty, and everything). She talked them down to $35,150. The sticket shows MSRP of 29,990 + 5,580 for ATP + 225 for carpet floor & trunk mats + 69 for rear bumper applique + 67 for wheel locks + 7600 delivery/processing/handling fee = $36,691 total sticker.

    She's a good negotiator, eh?

    Ok, two points here.
    1. Thats a heck of a deal. I don't even know how that was possible. So, you're saying it was around 36K, but then you said 43K? How much was that warranty originally?

I still don't have a clear picture of the discounts you got. At the risk of being nosy I am very curious about that for my own negotiating reasons.

    2. I'm not sure how I'd feel about my wife buying me one as a gift. I mean, again at the risk of getting into a personal topic, are we talking she just went down there and paid cash for a new car from her own account for you? Did she put the downpayment down and now you have payments? In either of those cases, are we talking about "we" money from a joint account that you both contribute to for household expenses? In that case, did she really buy you one?
In the earlier case, if you guys are sitting on cash like that,...good lordy!!
I'm not sure how I'd feel about someone doing that (depending on which of the above it is) because I'd wanna pick out my own options, and color, and I personally especially enjoy the haggling.

To add to my point, if you paid 4.35% sales tax on it at 35,150 OTD, then she had to talk them down to around 33,500 before title and liscense, on a 37K car AND they had to basically give you the extended warranty for free.

Are you willing to share the dealer info? Was it end of month? Quarter? Did they have several on the lot? Did the dealer since then go out of business?

Ha ha. Great questions. I do not know how much the warranty was. She haggled this deal herself. She LOVES to shop and NEVER pays full retail for ANYTHING. You won't believe the deals she can haggle. She knows what to ask and when to ask it. And what not to say until the moment is right. I don't know how she does it, but I know that my presence jinxes it! She did this all on her own and it was a HUGE surprise!

She bought it from Stapp Interstate Toyota in northern Colorado. It arrived in the 1st week of December. It was only the 2nd Prius v they had and it was being shipped to them. It just happened to have everything I wanted but the exterior color. They are still in business :)

And yes, she paid cash (from her own money). There was no trade in. Vehicle registration taxes for the tile & tags were not part of the total.

    Cheers!

For Russ, MSRP was $36,691, negotiated down to $35,150.

I negotiated $500 above invoice using a Truecar quote as backup/leverage and eddend up paying $35,043 for the vehicle. Add tax (8.5 in NY?), floor mats, cargo cover and cargo envelope net and I paid $37,762.28 OTD.

So I'm guessing that Russ's wife spent $5776 on tax and dealer options to get to the $43526 final number. I feel that dealer options add piece of mind, and it just depends on how much YOU want that piece of mind vs. how much you are willing to spend.

So I say, YES I think Russ's wife was a good negotiater.

@Rhizzlebop; I think your item 2 issue is way nosy and revealing of your views (about relationships?). Your comment about having money to buy a car, "Good Lordy." can be taken as a negative. Maybe I'm just revealing my feelings. I feel a little guilty buying a new car when times are tough for so many. But, it is part of my 10 year plan for my cars, and I put money away over the 10 years to buy my next car. So is that "Good Lordy" money?

No, it wasn't negotiated from $36,691 down to $35,150. It was negotiated from $43,526 down to $35,150. I know she didn't spend that much on tax. It was in the $1500-1700 range.

And about Rhizzlebop's comment, I take no offense. We keep our money separate to a degree. My wife is just very smart with money. She has a lot of training in a lot of areas around money.

Chazz, I understand the 10 year plan and I work with something along those same lines myself. It probably was a bit nosy and I admit that. I will say that if I was working on a 10 year car rotation plan as you say and someone went without my knowing and bought a car using that "savings" I don't think I'd be thrilled with that. Maybe thats wrong of me. But its a good working model you have for that.

As for his deal, I thought Russ was saying it was 35.xx OTD after the 4.35% tax. If before, then sure, he got a good deal and thats great.

I thought he was saying it was ORIGINALLY 43K with taxes and all, with the warranty and all options and she ended up paying 35K OTD. That is a STEAL. No, better than a steal. A deal of the century for all time.

If it was 43K before, and she paid 35K + 4.35% taxes then thats closer to 37K OTD and while a great deal, not the deal of the century that boggles the mind.

Sorry if anyone was offended by my posts. Apologies to all.
I just see those Benz commercials where people "give" cars for christmas and it just baffles me some of the money some people must earn (If the other half really live like that), and I'm a mech engr and that befuddles my brain.

Yes, it was $43K with taxes and all. Negotiated down to $35K OTD.

FYI, I'm a software engineer and my wife is a neuropsychologist (but was a business investment banker previously [among many other things :)]).

So then it is $43K Out The Door (OTD)? As in, they make you pay with taxes and all before they let you walk out the door with the keys and paperwork.

Thanks for sharing your experience Russ!

MSRP + warranty + taxes (yes the make you pay sales tax right then & there) + etc... would have been $43K. She walked out the door at $35,150.

I didn't read your last post very well. My bad.

Oh Wow. Now I see just how good of a negotiater she is. It sounds like she is really into the finer skills/aspects of negotiating, that can with persistence lead to at/near/below dealer cost deals.

Dealer vehicle MSRP: 36,330 (Russ's configuration Truecar.com, but no warranty)
Dealer vehicle cost : 33,665 (Russ's configuration Truecar.com, but no warranty)
Negotiated vehicle price: 33,500 (estimate from Rhizzlebop post #23)

I would love to hear the best reason she used to convince a salesman/dealer to sell her a brand new model at/near cost. They didn't thorow in free extended warranty did they? Otherwise the dealer was actually loosing money.

This thread is getting out of control. LOL
Russ, you got me curious again. What total are you talking about when you say "Vehicle registration taxes for the tile & tags were not part of the total."

She said she paid half price for the extended warranty (from $3000 down to $1500) and they cut GAP down to $300. And the taxes were $1545.04. They also eliminated the delivery & handling charge. So yes, she got it below dealer cost. She also got a recent graduation incentive of $1000 (just got her PhD).

She basically just told them what she wanted. She wasn't willing to budge and she was more than ready to walk out anytime.

In Colorado, we pay sales tax at the time of purchases. Then we get a temp tag/plate. Then we get a postcard in the mail (6 weeks or so) saying to go to the local DMV and pay for ownership tax & license plates. This money is not included in any of the prior discussions.

Awesome negotiating!!! I am just now learning how to use the Golden rule in negotiating (He or she), who has the gold (or money) makes the rules.

Thanks again for sharing and bringing back more info for our detail oriented PriusChat members.

    Thanks for clarifying.
This is the first I've heard of anyone getting a recent graduate discount on this vehicle. I know lexus was running such an offer for a while, but havn't heard it on Toyota, nor on the Prius V in particular.

When I saw that on lexus, I think it was within 2 years of graduating? Or maybe within 12 months?
