Hi everyone, I just picked up a new 2012 white Prius V (not five) and I really love the car, but a very small part of me still wonders if I should have bought a golf wagon TDI for longevity.

Obviously there is nothing I can do about it now, but I am still interested in people's thoughts and opinions from others who know more about cars than I do.

    Thank you all in advance.

You should have many years and miles of life with the Prius. Your cost of ownership will be much less than the VW. Enjoy the car and don't worry about it.

I'd be worried about "longevity" if I bought the VW TDI. You can compare the owners forums for the two vehicles to verify this & look at the level of problems being listed. Here, it's relatively mundane.

Your new Prius is practically bullet-proof in comparison and will provide many years of service. Start looking thru the 2010 Prius forums for information about your vehicle - essentially, it's the same.

The nagging doubts suck, don't they? When I even considered getting a Prius, I did a web search and found this site. The first thing I did was look through the forums for any information regarding problem spots with the Hybrid system as well as the car in general. I really couldn't find any warning flags, mind you, this was back in 2007 or so. This is true today.

While individual cars may vary, I think that you made a good decision in general. The odds are with you.

Jetta TDI wagon and Prius V were on my "buy" list. I did tons of reading and comprising among 2 brands. Toyota quality and reliability, which I experienced personally, made my mind. Although I may be missing on "fun to drive" aspect.

This is my seconds Prius since 2007. I have NEVER had a mechanical issue! Just enjoy your new ride and be happy. It will not disappoint you.

My '07 GTI was visiting the shop every 3 or 4 months over the 4 years I had it. It wasn't the powertrain that gave me trouble, either. They are nice cars, but VW cheaps out on expensive, important bits. I had 2 AC compressors, O2 sensors, cruise control, and 4ish recalls among other things I cannot even remember. I loved that car but it was clear that it had to go before the powertrain warranty period was up. I've had my 4Runner for almost 2 years now and not a single issue and I've been offroading multiple times with it.

If you miss going to a repair shop often, then you bought the wrong car. Buying a VW guarantees frequent visits after the warranty is over, and you'll enjoy all those wonderful talks with your mechanic. However VW's are great if you lease.

We've had our vee wagon for three weeks now and never considered any other car maker. Our first Prius, 2005 Five, is seven years old now with 135000 miles. I changed the oil per recommendations and replaced tires three times, wipers four times, the 12v battery a couple of weeks ago, the spark plugs last week and I'm still on the original brakes. We kept the 2005 Prius as it looks and drives like a new car.

You won't find a Volkswagen with a history like my 2005 Prius.

You made the right choice and time will prove it.

IMHO with exception to Porsche (which is a timeless beloved driving/racing machine to me) you made, without a shadow of doubt, the 100% right choice to get a Toyota compared to a VW.

In fact don't think for one second that the VW will survive longer or be more reliable.

If you want a reliable and sustainable auto....Toyota Prius wins. Case closed. Period. End of discussion.

Nah. You'll just learn that fun comes in different flavours. If you track your mileage, a high MPG tank becomes a new "high score." If you drive the speed limit, you'll be stress-free because you don't look for cops. When you come to a stop light or a drive-thru, your engine shuts down. You whir around in parking lots instead of spitting fumes. Because of regen braking, maybe you'll never change your brake pads if go easy on them. And haul almost anything you want while doing all of the above!!

Thank you all for your comments and taking the time to share your thoughts. I already love the Prius, more and more everyday.

During the break in period my dealer told me to really vary my speed for the first 1600km or 1000 miles. So obviously that will affect my gas mileage so it's only going to get better from here.

The Prius V is a quality product and I'm very happy with my choice.

Some people I know think I should have bought something else but we all know that over time gas prices are only going to go up, up and up some more.

The people with big gas guzzling suv's are not going to be very happy.

Thanks again everyone, glad to be part of this group.

This is our first Prius and it runs very smooth and extremely quiet and tends to have us fall asleep jokingly, I was shopping around for a few months but we kept coming back to a Prius. Then drove the 2012 Prius v and my wife was sold. My 07 tundra is just sitting in the garage and I'm debating on maybe selling it for something more fuel efficient, its paid in full as of last year but I think it cost me more to drive it then to enjoy it so went and got the Prius. I might even sell the tundra for a Prius or another hybrid like the highlander. I agree with the previous post of having a blast driving and trying to eek the most mpg. I can still go 70 with Prius so I got no need of getting a faster moving vehicle. I am also the same way trying to re confirm why I bought the Prius over other vehicles, but we bought it for reliability, fuel efficiency, neat trick of engine shutting off during a stop, and kind of all else it just made sense with how much we drive.

Oh the other vehicle I found out after I purchased this was the Lexus CT200h and it was around the same price range as a v five but I didn't know about it. So I just convinced myself that paid less and it has more space than the Lexus. As you can see I too at a dilemma of never being satisfied, but I still love my Prius v and IMO drives like a dream.

Goose, when I heard about the ct I was super excited. It was going to be my next car. Sleek lexus styling, nice leather inside, and 42 mpg.....

Then I went and drove one. Styling is nice, leather is nice. Super low sitting position is not good. Cramped back seat is BAD. Let me rephrase that. Insanely small back seat is totally unacceptable for human occupancy. Tthe ride is more firm than the v, and the interior noise level is significantly louder than the V.

Lastly, it rreally felt like at highway speed it struggles to stay up to speed where the V just seemed to float along effortlessly.

Night and day between these cars. I was all about the lexus, but its justt not an option unfortunately. I'd love to have some nice leatherr in an affordable 40 mpg car, but that car does not exist.

I thought the CT also used a synthetic leather? Regardless, since most cars claiming Leather interiors have little more than small leather patches, with the majority being vinyl, they'd be more properly called vinyl, NOT leather. Regardless, I think the feel of my syntek seats on the Prius V5 feels as good or better than any other car I've seen in recent years. I don't recall a car interior that felt as supple since the old Mark III, and IV Lincolns.

I had huge doubt about this material, but now, after a month and a half, I'm sold!! No chintzy leather for me!!! No way, no how!!

You might find that, over time, it's a bit boring to drive, but these cars seem to be quite durable and I'd expect many good years out of your Prius.
