EV Display unit from www.cleanautopower.com is what I am using.

The Canview V4 from www.hybridinterfaces.ca can also be used to measure AH going out of NiMH//Lifepo4 battery packs. It does not measure AH going into battery packs during charging so it has to be reset to a fully charged AH value after the batteries are charged. Charging is done whilst Prius is switched off so Canview is also switched off.

A OEM hall sensor bypass is also needed.

    Hello, Europ.

On priuschat pEEf has done this. On this thread we all keep nimh connected.

    There are always taxes somewhere.
The less expensive is to buy A123 cells at xueming on ebay.

You can use Canview, Ev display or a PC with a dongle. That is what I use and I have too Ah like canview. My dongle is Canusb.

Actually on this thread, you can see four diy plugin system.
Wth A123 or Calb cells. And one with also 2 enginer kit.
With minibms or cellog or peter perkins bms
    With elcon charger
    With canview or a pc+dongle

    :)

    Hello planetaire,

I tried to read your blog, but that is in France. :(
Why do you use 5 bank? To keep the voltage under 50V?

Yes, I will order 72pcs A123 from xueming, but I would like to make 1 battery pack(bank) instead of 5.

Is there any other blogs, chats where the topik is diy plugin?

Replacement of the OEM battery is a good ambition. pEEF actually replaced the OEM battery ECU with his own made battery ECU. He also built a device which captures the Canbus message between the ICE ECU (also called ECM - Engine Control Mudule) and the Hybrid ECU which turns on ICE and modifies it so ICE stays disabled. Probably the same method used by the BMSplus which changes the HV battery SoC Canbus message between the OEM battery ECU and the Hybrid ECU.

I figure that if you install a BMS2 next to the ECM on the Canbus you could in theory program the BMSplus to capture the ICE disable/enable Canbus message from the Hybrid ECU and modify it and resend it. But this would require a lot of programming. Not to mention buying another BMSplus or BMS2 and modify it's programming.

The link below shows where you would need to install a BMS2 between the Hybrid ECU and the ECM.

    http://share.qclt.com/丰田普瑞斯原厂英文手册PDF格式/Repair Manual/04pruisr/05/21acw/cistsdes.pdf

All of which requires extensive knowledge of Canbus messages. We all would be interested in how you go.

You could use some google translation. It is often funny but sometimes understandable. :D

5 packs is because 70 A123 cells 20Ah. 70 cells have maximum voltage near 245v and fall near 235v when cells are fully charged. So you have an usual voltage for Nimh and for bms+. You are not a long time over 240v.

I will try 72 cells but with 40Ah.

Fwd will test 72 A123 20Ah. He promised taking pictures :D
It could be a little too high. May be engine will use compression mode ?

So 70 cells can be divide in 2, 5, 7 or 10. I use 5, so each pack is 8kg and 5 can be placed side by side in the rear trunk.
Each pack have a non dangerous voltage and can be recharged using low voltage charger (48v +-10%)

    :)

I have added two more A123 cells today. Now using 72 x A123 cells. Drove home with 72 cells and with SoC at about 60% and nothing out of the ordinary happened. See what happens tomorrow when I drive with a fully charged pack. As a result I need to retune my DC Converters to a higher voltage.

Have you found 40Ah version or you will contact 2pcs of them in parallel way?

sorry stil not behind pc and sick at the moment so no way of getting pics from phone to pc.

the pack is taken apart again.
cells are now in parallel so higher voltage cells will discharge in lower and in 24 hours I hope these will be the same.

    I also put a 5 amps ( don't have bigger ) 3,6 volts. charger on the pack.

I hope to bring the cells somewhere close in soc and put them back in series ..

    72 cells in // x 20ah = 1440ah @ 5amps charge = 288 hours = 12days from totally empty. That's a long wait.

I have some strange stuff with my celllogs
next to that some of them blankout the screen sometimes also flips up side down!
i do read that other people also have that but that the units even when blanked out stil have a working alarm.
anyone here with the cells logs noticed the same.. blank or flipped screen but still working?

i also got the 8S today so i can do 1 celllog logging in the future.
this unit seems to have non of the problems of the 9 celllogs 8M that i have. ( and those came from 3 shops UK en NL )

    about the cells
lets say the cells are 50% charged and are 18ah
so i have 9ah in them.
with the series charge i put in about 6,5ah but needed to stop because cells where getting to high. ( more then the 9ah i geuss or bad cells with a low capacity )
it wil bring them up to 15,5ah.

i now taken apart the battery pack and put them back in, this time in parallel.
the cells do come closer in voltage but still a 20mvolt diff? maybe it needs to be connected longer then 24 hours or its some bad connections with more resistants.

lets see tomorrow! i am also feeling a little better ( stomach pain ) so i hope tomorrow its al good

    well its the day after.
cells stil not the same.. strange
I think some bad connection in the 72 cells and 144 tabs in parallel
Yhea its a lot of connections.

I am putting the 5amps charger on those cells that ate stil at 3.3cc volts
some are now at 3.4x and .5x just 2 of them stay low that I am charging now.
u hope that after this a can top balance the pack .

buth then the question remains how long to top balance..
stop the moment the last cell gets up to 3.7( bleeding boards ) or will this cell drop faster after stoppen or do I need to keep it on for 30 min and then shuttoff.

tonight or tomorrow I will but the pack back in series and hope to be ably to charge.

and again..the question then is what happens if I discharge to 3 volts and charge again... will I have the same problem...

the day after the day.... maybe a new movie title... a plutonium virus breaksout.
anyway.... I am a bit further..
1 cell is still low 3,3 and 1 high 3,6 al the rest fluctuate buth are up to 3,5
I am charging that one cell now.
and going keep that high one lower

maybe I get a top balance today

new update a few bleeding boards seem to be not working
beside that I almost have al cells up so not yet but getting close to a top balance
