I have a 2006 prius with the smart key system and it's great.
Today I bought a 2012 prius with the smart key system (I still have my 2006).
The dealer didn't have any answer to this question, and I'm not too confident in his knowledge (to put it nicely).

I now have 2 SKS keys for the 2006, and 2 SKS keys for the 2012. I would like to program the keys to open both cars, so that I could carry one key, and simply pick a car. I've done this with car alarms with multiple other cars. The SKS keys seem much more difficult to work with.

Can I have one SKS key linked to 2 cars?

Any help would be appreciated, I've searched, and haven't found an answer.

    Thanks in advance
    Gene

The car is programmed to accept the fob. The fob is not programmed. I guess if you have enough money, you could probably have 2 car accept the same fob. It would require the dealer get a reseeding code from Toyota to wipe out the ECU for one of the cars. However, I'm not sure if that can be done between a Gen II and a Gen III.

The challenging art of the possible.

My speculation is the entire SKS system is probably designed to discourage the possibilty of one SKS fob opening and operating another vehicle. That's kind of the reality any "key" system wants to avoid.

No. The two fob systems are different. There has been speculation that it should be possible with two Prius of the same generation, but no one has ever been able to make it work. With a Gen II and Gen III there is no chance.
