On Friday, December 2, my beloved step-mother died suddenly. It was a shock to us all - especially my dear father.

My father, who is deaf, had the police call me to say that she was involved in an accident and that I needed to come to the hospital ASAP. Well, I live 60 miles from the hospital so I had to break almost every law on the highway to get there.

I jumped on I95 and pushed my wonderful Prius to its limits. My max speed was 105 mph... scary. It ain't made to go that fast, but it kept me safe and sound. I ended up making it to the hospital in 35 minutes.

I'm pleased to say that 80% of the people that were in my way moved over. I had been flashing my lights the entire time I zipped up the highway, and had my 4-way flashers on. My thanks to all of them!

My step-mother would have chided me for speeding, but she would have appreciated my dedication to my dad.

    My condolences as well. :(

I'm glad your Prius was able to perform when needed and that most people made way for you. The last thing you'd want is an accident on the way.

its still no reason to put everyone elses life in danger though. if your going to go 105 do it on an open road so you only harm yourself and not me and everyone else on the road. if your stepmother is going to go on to a better place then it was meant to be, you will see her eventually weather it will be 15 minutes later, or after you roll your prius and pass away yourself.

I can only believe you used this as a personal justification to drive fast and I would not condone your behavior for this particular circumstance. Sorry but you were an idiot!!! I-95 is a major north south artery which suffers many accidents due to wrecklessness, you were just lucky that your were not involved in an accident or caused someone else to cause one getting out of your way. Emergency flashers are for non moving emergencies, the only vehicles allowed to run with them are bonafide emergency vehicles and in some states tow vehicles, they were not installed to be used by people who need to drive excessivly fast.

I think he meant the hazard lights when he said flashers.

tbstout2, sorry about your loss. Hope you and your father are coping well with the loss.

Some people can't drive at 35 safely and others can drive at 105 safely.
Some peoples definition of "safe" is slow.. sometimes that is more dangerous!..

I used to drive ambulance and am very comfortable driving very fast.
I would have also driven so fast as you did providing i could do it safely, but driving reckless indeed would be foolish possibly risking leaving your own family in loss for you also.....
I trust you didn't so that.
My definition of a safe driver verses my wifes definition are two different things!....
By her definition, she would be quickly killed on a race course, by mine, I would be just fine.

Sorry for your loss, I hope you can comfort all who are grieving.

If you don't mind my asking... did you notice what was your mpg at 105 mph?
just had to ask... curious!.. thanks.....

60 miles in 35 minutes? That's an AVERAGE speed of 102.8 MPH. Surely a world record for such a distance on public highways with other traffic.

mmm...sorry for your loss and hope the pain goes with time.

    Now for the hand slapping....

no, no, no.... justification for that speed. That is reserved fully for law enforcement, emergency rescue vehicles, and professional race car drivers. If the police really wanted you at the hospital "ASAP", they would have sent a unit over. But what was the rush really? Hadn't she already passed?

Following the point you got the phone call, you were in not in full charge of your mental facilities, overwhelmed with grief. If that is the case, you probably don't remember most of the drive. The chemical imbalances in your head at that point was similar to being drunk.

I'm sure there is more to the story, there always is. But the truth is, you put other people's lives in danger needlessly - anyone who supports this kind of action has little regard for others around them. This statement always seems to bring the nuts out of the woodwork with some excuse to drive that fast. I've heard it all - but in the end, they all sound pathetic and childish.

There have been more than 1 death that night.

    why?

    So...

Your Prius can go 105mph. I guess that would be more impressive if there were a photo.. but fun info.

I also don't see the point behind driving wildly beyond the speed of the traffic flow.. flashing lights, people moving over. When I see that, or hear that, my first thought is.. hope they don't kill anyone else in their stupidity. and secondly, if I could ever need a trooper, this is it... I have never seen that person get pulled over... Just once I'd love to see that excessive weaver/speeder come flying by, then be pulled over a couple miles down the road.

I don't think you could claim that you were driving up to a 102 average and feeling perfectly fine and safe about it. Which means.. you were on the edge, or much closer to it. How tragic if you were to have killed another family on your way to whatever destination you thought you were going.

Life doesn't get much more selfish than what you did. Someone "Is going to die" doesn't even justify it, muchless "someone has already died".

Sorry for your time of loss. Glad it didn't end up with another dead family, a big wreck on the interstate and you in prison for being stupid.

Will reserve commentary on the speed issue, but I have one question.

What was your MPG during the trip?

LOL!.... Well tbstout2 don't get upset.. at least you can rest assured that your friends out here will be honest with you!

You really would have felt pretty dumb if you would have crashed or killed someone else... but like I said.. I've done pretty dumb things too while under the influence "not alcohol either!"
