Upgraded from 2010 to 2012 MY - a few questions on differences

    Hey all. I just gave my dad my 2010 Prius 3 and purchased a 2012 Prius 3 yesterday. There are noticeable differences with the navigation system which I find annoying because it seems like Toyota made a lot of things more difficult to do. In no particular order, I have a few questions about the 2012:

    1. Please tell me the vehicle proximity notification system can be disabled or removed similar to the constant annoying beeps that occur when the car is placed in reverse. I am genuinely embarrassed by the sound it makes.

    2. I spent hours going through the manuals yesterday but couldn't find out what "Remote 2-Press unlock" and "Key system with electric key" (both found under Vehicle Settings) do.

    3. On p.206 of the manual, it says "up to 4 devices can be paired at the same time." Does that mean that multiple phones can be connected at the same time? I know this wasn't possible with my 2012 and it doesn't seem to be the case now but wasn't sure if I missed a menu option.

    I can only answer the last. No the phones are not simultaneous. You have to choose the one you want to use.

    The dealer can easily disable the annoying/constant reverse beep. It only took mine a few minutes to do, and it is much better!

    Thanks guys. I poorly wrote #1. I had the reverse beep changed to one beep with my last car (as I intend to do with this one) and was hoping that the proximity notification could be changed as well, although I doubt it.

    That's akin to asking the dealer to remove the seat belt. No way that'll happen now that it's written into law. The difference is reverse beeping isn't required by law.

    That's what I was worried about. One question I forgot to ask is: when I try to look at text messages using the navigation system, it says "text message synchronization not supported on your bluetooth device." I have a fairly new phone so it's definitely not outdated with features. Is there something I need to change in the settings of the phone or the car to make this work?

    I would like to know this as well Mine says the same thing - I have an iphone 4, and I sync both bluetooth as well as through the USB.

    It's phone-specific. I believe between Androids and iPhones, one can do e-mail and the other can do text. Neither system can do both.


    To get the same nav system as the 2010, you need the Premium HDD navigation. That one is Toyota's (Denso) unit.

    2. Remote 2-Press Unlock basically means when you press the UNLOCK button on the key fob, do you want it to unlock the driver's door first and then when you press the button again, unlock all doors (default) or do you want it unlock ALL doors on the first press.

    Never heard of the 2nd part but I assume it means Smart Key.

    3. It means that you can pair up to 4 phones (or in other words, the system can remember the device code for up to 4 different phones). This way, if you have multiple drivers, you don't have to pair it each and every time. If your phone wasn't the last one connected to the car, then simply change the phone in the settings menu or use the voice command "Change Phone" or something like that. You can only use one phone at a time. This is the same setup as on the 2010.

    Thank you very much for the information. I wish I had done my research before going to purchase the 2012 because I definitely would have opted for the Premium HDD. C'est la vie.

    On a side note, how long should it take for the traffic on the navigation map (the sirius xm traffic, not the Toyota app) to show up? With the 2010, it would take around 30 seconds some time from the car turning on but with this it sometimes doesn't show up at all.

    You're welcome. I've seen a few reviews of the Camry Hybrid and Prius c where the reviewer complained that accessing the nav isn't as obvious because it's under the "APPS" button and then I realised their test car was equipped with the DA system instead of the Premium HDD (in the case of the Camry Hybrid which has that option) which will be more familiar to previous Toyota owners who have had Toyota navs in their vehicles.

    I'm not sure since I haven't played around with the DA systems long enough. The units we had were already running so they would've had time to gather the data.

    I must be getting old. As a drive I have not heard the noisemaker that much inside the car. I was worried about it but am not now. Drive one and see if you can hear it, it is very tough to detect.

    As to disabling it, make sure you find a good lawer first. You will be the magnet for law suits as you will be found negligent in any damage award.

    I only hear an electric motor sound inside my car on occasion. I'm not sure if it's the noise maker or the motor. Either way, it's not at all annoying. In fact, I like it!

    Thanks. After driving some more, I've noticed that there are times when the traffic doesn't load at all. Not sure if it's a Toyota issue or Sirius Traffic.

    I can't seem to figure out how to delete an old phone number in my Prius. I'm hoping that if I do that & have only one phone paired to it there will be no issues always picking a phone. I've taken it by several dealers & audio stores & nobody seems to know how to delete the old number in the #1 position. Anybody have any hints?

    Old number as in a contact in the phonebook or old number as in you want to "unpair" a phone?

    The car will always pick the last phone that was connected. I have two phones paired (my RAZR and the iPhone) and it'll always pick the iPhone until I manually swap it.

    To delete a phone....

    SETUP --> Phone --> Manage Phones --> Options (near the top of the screen) --> Remove Phones. Select the phone you wish to delete.

    Tideland, since youve been so helpful maybe you can help with this. I can't hear my ipod anymore. It's connected fine, I see that its playing on the screen, can even change the songs, but can't hear it. ive checked the sound settings, restarted the ipod, unplugged and replugged, turned car on and off, but nothing. I hear the radio fine and even BT with my phone.

    Thanks for the help. Nobody seems to be able to figure it out including me. I've been trying to delete my old phone that was paired in the car. It seems to have a hard time working with my wife's phone. She has to select her phone & then turn off BT & then turn it back on for the phone to work. It's very different from my Corolla as all I have to do is get in & it sees my phone every time I start the car up.

    You might want to make sure the volume didn't accidentally get turned down on your Ipod. I've done that and it took me a while to figure it out, kept turning up the car audio.:D
