I rather suspect that this is a matter of not-believing in the political ideology and being 'trouble makers', rather than a strictly religious issue. Millions of people were killed by those regimes without the convenient excuse of religion.

It is tragic, but I think 'enemy of the state', rather than 'enemy of our non-existent god' was the excuse. I most certainly wasn't saying that atheists don't kill people, sadly enough.

The Wikipedia article makes it clear a substantial number of people in the places listed were killed for belief....not the only reason people were killed, but definitely among them.

Religion IS politics Bra... The chinese killed lots of religious folks in the great purge post WW2... as did the commies in the soviet bloc... not unlike the crusades.

Harold Camping, predicted end of the world twice, admits error

"Harold Camping, the doomsday radio preacher who has predicted the end of the world for more than a decade, has told his followers that he has no evidence that his predictions and reality would ever overlap. Thus, he will cease predicting the date they would coincide.

Camping ... first predicted Judgment Day would descend in September 1994. Last year, he invested millions in a campaign that pronounced the definitive end on May 21. When that didn't happen, he revised the date to Oct. 21."

Is he giving them their money back?

Even at a religious level, this sounds like admission of fraud, to me.

If the prosecution can convince a jury that they planned the conversion and knew there wasn't a second coming, then maybe Bra... but these nutbags DO BELIEVE there will be a second coming... they will say they just got the timing wrong.

Is there a religion that isn't a fraud? They promise you everlasting life in return for money and obedience. The only difference with Camping is that he promised a delivery date.

Oh, and he made a falsifiable claim. The others are careful to make no falsifiable claims, so that no matter how often they are wrong, they have an excuse. (Shape of the Earth, age of the Earth, geometry of the solar system, persistence of species; they keep getting it wrong, but they keep making excuses or just outright denying.) They're all frauds. At least Camping is entertaining.

Reminds me of another board I'm on; someone wanted to use a biblical quote as a tattoo to go with their John 3:16 tattoo. Somebody suggested Leviticus 19:28.

Not only that but by most scholarly guesstimates of the Bible all prophecies that had a chronological component ended somewhere in the mid 1800's. No matter, no one gets out alive, or do they?

Believe in the power of the truss Bra... and you may be spared the pain and torment that the unbelievers will be suffering when they do not yield to the healers' words of wisdom...

I understand it ain't salvation, but it isn't as painful with a truss.

Since last May 21, Harold Camping has disappeared from shortwave radio to be heard in this part of Asia. A shame, he really has a restful voice.

I assume his website is still active but it is among those blocked around here.
