Hi. I have already posted about the groaning sound in my Prius v but yesterday had to have it towed because the brakes locked while driving in reverse. Has anybody else had this issue. I was going backwards, the car stopped, i went to depress brake pedal and i could not push down at all. It was totally locked. Happened twice. Any suggestions. We are waiting to see what service has to say.

That is very strange. I wonder if there was something funky in the regenerative brakes. Please let us know what you learn. W

I haven't experienced the brakes locking up. However, every once in a while the brakes are extremely sensitive when put in reverse. As if it's on high alert. Pressing in the brake pedal slightly caused the brakes to engage making it difficult to back out in a smooth motion. I wasnt pumping the pedal at all. My wife thought I was being funny as we reversed out of a parking spot. I hope this doesn't continue. Please tell me that it's just the regerative brakes being funny and not future issues to come.

I am still waiting to hear from Toyota with regard to this. I wanted to make you aware that if for what ever reason you need to have your Prius towed because of this, DO NOT let the tow truck driver drive it up onto the platform. When the driver did this to our vehicle, he had his foot pressed on the brake and depressed the gas pedal at the same time, as if it where a standard, and when he did this, it messed up the report that they printed on the vehicle. They said the incidents where to close to pin point what happened. So if you need a tow, do not have them drive the vehicle. They were not able to determine what happened this time.

Oh nice. I need to look at the owner's manual to see if them winching it up in neutral is acceptable. I do remember a 4 wheel tow (as in behind a motor home) wasn't recommended. Otherwise how do they get it on the roll back? W

If they drive it up on the roll back, make sure that they do not need specific information from your car's computer. That is what got us. The brake incident happened at 12:45 pm and the tow truck driver drove it up the roll back at about 3:30pm, hit a large chain that was on the bed, tried to drive over the chain and by doing this he had to put his foot on the brake and the gas at same time and then the dealer told us that they couldn't pinpoint what happened because it showed multiple incidents because of the tow truck driver. Kinda hard to explain, but I recommend asking the dealer before it is towed.

Just experienced this yesterday backing out of the garage into mid 70"s temp and no precip. Only 500 miles and have backed up many times, thought it was me. Very strange, will monitor.

Does the Prius even have regenerative brakes in reverse?

I don't think so. The only thing I can say about my brakes so far is at times they are 'grabby' in reverse. I have my foot on the brake but generally light to no pressure and it can look like someone learning to drive a manual transmission. Our other v did groan but I haven't had complaints yet but my spouse doesn't pay as close of attention as I do. W

It almost sounds like a "hill hold" engagement scenario???

Not possible at low speed or in reverse. This is an issue with the normal friction brakes.
