So the dashboard touch screen is starting to go in my 2004 Prius (111k miles). Acting flaky, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the radio shuts off randomly. Apparently this is an issue with the 2004's.

I'm wondering if I do an aftermarket install of another stereo, will that wiring bypass the dash touch screen???

Basically, the only annoying part (to me) about the touch screen going is the radio keeps shutting itself off. Rather than replace the whole thing (from what I've read, $3-4k from Toyota or find another yourself for $400), can't I just add a stereo???? I saw a "stealth install" on here where he put it in the storage box below the touch screen.

I just didn't know if the new stereo wiring would end up going through the touchscreen, and once that goes for good, my new stereo won't work...

    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

An after market radio will not be controlled by the Multi-Function Display (MFD) and will work independently. You can also hook it up to listen to the steering wheel controls, but this often requires purchasing a special interface.

Your MFD also controls the AC and provides access to diagnostic information, so you probably should look into a $400 replacement. I suggest that you contact:

Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle PHEV

    To get a refurbished MFD.

thanks so much! I noticed the A/C was still working using the steering controls, so that's what I've been doing when it goes haywire.

I had no clue where to start to look for a refurbished one, the only thing I saw was where a guy found one on ebay.

    thanks again :)
