I took my 2006 Prius into the dealership a few months ago for an oil change. When I drove the car away from the dealership I heard a weird pop from the area of the glove box. When I opened the glove box later to see what had happened, the glove box only opened about halfway. Some part of the spring mechanism had been compromised.

When I returned to the dealership telling them to fix the glove box, they examined it and concluded that the glove box was opening just fine.

If anyone has a chance, could you please shoot and share a brief video of your upper glove box opening, to show the extent to which it fully opens on its own? I would like to present such a video to my dealership folks, who seem not to know how their own parts are meant to function.

    Thanks!

Here it is. It's dark here :) so had to use a video-light. Hope it helps you.

Haven't had the Prius long, so no idea if mine is normal or not.

i was going to scold R-P for holding the camera so low but he redeemed himself at the end of the video by holding his hand up to give us a reference for scale, the dealership will remove the lower glove box to gain access to the cabin air filter, they are of course looking for any excuse to upsell you a new HVAC filter, its been ages but I'm pretty sure the dealership price for the engine air filter is not too outrageous but their price (I think around $30) is way higher than a Fram if you are lucky enough to find the correct size at Walmart.

There is a sort of strut that prevents the lower glove box from opening too far, for some reason it has 3 holes, the hold on the expanding part goes on the lower glove box, and the middle hold attaches to the dash, than there is a 3rd hole which has no use for the Prius, perhaps its there so the part can also be used in another vehicle(s). So I can see a careless error being made regarding the lower glove box but not the upper.

The video shows the correct amount the upper glove box should open, check the seam between the upper glove box and the dash, in one of my Prius the dash plastic had deformed to obstruct the upper dash from opening very far, gentle rasps from a rubber mallet took care of the problem.

You don't want an eBay girlfriend. The "Buy it now" price might look good, but you'll keep paying long after you get her home...

I Just bought a 2004 Prius, of course when I bought I saw the upper glove compartment spring protruding to,the upper dash.
I took the upper compartment off today to see what's going on. A slim plastic is holding the spring in place, that plastic is too slim for that spring. So i used a drill and drilled closed to where the spring is held. The spring is now being held through the inside part of the compartment barely seen, It works wonderful now.
