WOW !! That's a lot of oil to use for a modern engine. Mine goes 10K without using a drop, and I've never heard a valve noise from my engine once. I'm guessing that there may be something wrong with your engine, and it will probably only get worse if it's using that much oil now. I think I'll stick with Toyota or Mobil oil. I don't want my engine to use oil like yours does ... I think I'll stay far away from Amsoil products. :D

    That was more for yeldogt.

Yup, please feel free to use whatever you like. I know what works for me and I have tried three of the common 0W20 (both 2x) available on the market. Let me know if you have used them all. :welcome:

Your ICE will use or burn some oil. What your seeing is the gas/fuel/moisture replacing the oil that is lost so it looks like you never use any oil.

That is just amazing that gas/fuel/moisture can get together and know exactly how much oil has burned to bring the level to the exact same place on the dip stick every time it is checked.

Maybe Toyota should have called it The Smart Car instead of the Prius.

Yeah ... I thought the same thing ... all my cars' gas and moisture bleed thru must have that same intelligence .... because they ALL know just where on the dipstick that the level started ... :D

There is no problem with a little oil use between changes. It is perfectly normal for a little oil to get by the valve guides or rings especially in high mileage engines. Toyota says excessive consumption is more than 1.1 quarts/600 miles. I think I would be worried before it got to that point, but if my car used a quart or less between 10K mile changes I would not worry about it.

Not saying I'd worry about it .... just saying that my cars don't do it.

Wife's Corolla has 165,000 on it, and I've changed the oil with M1 5-30 Synthetic every 10K since 100,000, and every 5,000 before 100,000 miles. Doesn't use ONE DROP of oil. ZERO. The oil is a little dirtier after 10K than with the Prius, but it's still translucent.

Must be doing something right ... or that car can also tell how much gas and water to replace the burned oil with .... LOL

I'm a little bit late to this thread, so I apologize if the question has been answered before....

I was at Walmart the other day and saw Mobil One 0w20 in single quarts, but did not see a 5gt jug. Do I have to buy single quart bottles?

    Thanks- Ryan

Ryan, my wal-wart can be very hit or miss on what they stock. Right now they only have ow-20 in bottles. I'm about 2,500 miles from changing so I'm keeping an eye on their jug inventory. No biggie if they don't get any in time as I'll still spend a little less by buying 4 of the higher priced qt bottles. Actually I'll only need 3 (approx. $19) as I have a qt left over in the jug from the 20k mile change.

...quick check looks like you can order at Walmart.com for delivery to your local store. The big bottle is just cheaper (5qt@$25-26) and gives you a nice recepticle for used oil, and you can take it back to Walmart for recycling.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I'll keep my eye out for that big jug.

Ok then. Toyota is the only company in the world that has created the perfect piston ring. Not even one atom from the oil slips by the ring. Just amazing!!! All cars use some oil between oil changes.

Also i'm willing to bet your oil level is never been at the "EXACT" same place on the dip stick for thousands and thousands of miles.

I have no doubt. But as a measuring tool, the dip stick is very poor at precision. When I change my oil, the level that I can see is exactly where it was when I filled it. If it has lost oil, it is inperceptible using the dip stick method.

I know it has fuel and other stuff in it, Blackstone tells me every time I change it. Never any water or anti-freeze, but it has 0.5% or less fuel. But the level on the dip stick is constant. So maybe I have burned off less than 0.5% of oil between oil changes that occur at just slightly less than 10K miles. Or maybe I dont, how can you see 0.5% on a dip stick?

Checked again today at my local wal-wart five days after my last post in this thread and found 3 jugs on the shelf so I picked one up for my next 30k change. So, I should now have enough left overs from the previous jugs of the 1k, 10k 20k, and 30k oil changes to get a "free" 40k change.

I didn't take advantage of the free Toyota changes because a) it's a 100+ mile round trip plus time inconvenience and b) I didn't think they would honor the 1k change even though it would have been close to a year since it was built.

I had Mobil 1 as my 1st oil change & just had it replaced w/ Toyota 0/20 Synthetic as my 2nd oil change. Both seem to run fine:).

I picked up Toyota 0W20 yesterday. Normally I've been getting it from Open Road Toyota in Port Moody The first time I bought from Open Road it was $5.65 (CAN) per liter. More recently it climbed to $6.05.

Open Road parts department was closed for the Easter Weekend, so we ended up driving a bit east to West Coast Toyota in Pitt Meadows. There the price was was $5.75, and they threw in the drain plug washer that at Open Road was recently costing another 84 cents.

I've stuck with Toyota 0W20 with this car. Alternatives are hard to track down locally, and typically any aftermarket 0W20 is around $10 per liter, or higher. One exception is Honda's 0W20: it used to be around $8~9 per liter, but of late I believe it's a bit better, around $7.50.

For me, being to pick up everything I need for an oil change in one stop, and get a decent price for the oil, and know it's a reliable source, always available: is worth something.

Plus, I get a single document with all the ingredients for the oil change, which helps with maintaining the documention, I think.

Subaru dealers also stock 0W20 synthetic oil.
