Yeah, I get shit from my friends and others on buying a Prius but rode in my friend's 92 Integra with some modifications and got gas...[IMG]

That's bi-weely to go 300 miles....I have driven 260 since Monday afternoon around 4ish and just went to 1/2 tank as I pulled into the garage.:reckon: O and it's also nice not having to put 91 in like my last car...

Less $4,000 price difference is $756 over 7 years.

3% compound interest on $4,000 over seven years = $4,919.00.

You would have lost money over seven years with the hybrid.

The big bang is your cutting down on oil imports and greenhouse gases by 30%.

You are also figuring that the hybrid has lost all its hybrid resale value at 7 years.

But I contend that anyone trading in a car at a youthful 7 years and 84k miles is not really that serious about saving money in the first place, as the depreciation is still a killer. Two of the three vehicles in my household are over double that age and mileage.

Exactly. For the life of me I cannot understand why a vehicle that has a useful life of 15+ years and payback of the hybrid premium in less than that is considered a money loser. Do people understand that after the payback, the fuel savings are profit ?

There is also a fallacy in using averages, since it is obvious that half of all cars are not going to be hybrids tomorrow. I suggest using the 80th percentile of annual miles driven.

99% of my driving is business related, and I am always amazed at how high the reimbursement for car related expenses is -- about 25 cents a mile. The government pays for my Lexus hybrid and all costs of ownership, and leaves money in my pocket. That should tell people something about the real costs of conventional cars.

Teddy Roosevelt was a tree hugger conservative. i wish we had conservatives who believed in conservation.

we bought our Pruis v because it gets better gas mileage than other cars it's size. we need a car it's size for the utility. a mini van would be too big for the daily commute, would you drive a box truck as your commuter?

Actually we have conservatives that believe in conservation. They just don't get the press, and they are less likely to be viewed as EVIL by the opposition.

When my kids were young I drove a minivan to work every day. It was a 90 mile round trip. When you have five kids a minivan is about the only option you have. Back then fuel costs were a small part of the family budget. Hell when I got out of college and moved to Houston in 1973 I could buy gas for .19 per gallon.

If you really want to get people to conserve you need to force them. We need gas to be 7 -9 dollars a gallon. We need to take that extra money and develop alternative fuel sources, or at least greatly improve the ones we already have. Unfortunately our political system won't allow this to happen. It will only happen when the world demand for oil exceeds supply. We're actually not that far away.

Resale value has nothing to do with the calculation of does the savings in fuel costs equal or exceed the additional money paid for the car.

For average user, it does not as the numbers demonstrate.

That is why purchasing a Prius can be said to be a political statement regarding fuel efficiency, environment, oil wars, advanced technology. It is very socially responsible thing to do and we actually make a sacrifice in money to do it. Think of it as appealing to the mini-me Warren Buffet in all of us.

According to triple A the “average driver” drives less than 20 miles a day. At least that was the last article I remember seeing.
That said I don’t fall into that demographic. As I have noted before I bought my Prius after only having known about them for less than a month. (I know I must have been living under a rock)
At the time I owned two trucks, One was my “better on gas truck” the other my sport/hunting truck.
The better of the two was a 2008 Chevy S-10 that was getting 22mpg highway the other was a 1997 Dodge ram that was getting about 12 mpg no matter where I drove.
Driving more than 560 miles a week just for work took a bit of a chunk out of my wallet each week in fuel. So when I found out about the Prius in Dec 2007, later to buy one in Jan 2008. It was an economic decision for me. The payment on the S-10 was less than $50 shy of that on the Prius now since my fuel usage dropped to half that of the S-10 with only a $50 month difference I’d say in my case I saw an immediate saving not one seen over time.
In Jan 2008 my Prius had if memory serves 33K on it, today’s drive to work brought it to 145K. I’m well outside of the “norm” and have been very lucky with repair costs so in my case I’ve seen an overall investment well above what I would have seen with a gas only sedan even one made by Toyota.
I never thought for a second about it being political in any way or good for the environment, for me it was all about the $$$$$$$$
I looked at several gas only cars this week and a new Gen III, now it’s very difficult to quantify the dependability that I have seen with the Gen II I have and expect with a Gen III but I’m crunching the numbers now to pick my next ride. This time however I will be making a political statement and in some respects already have at the dealerships. I have refused to even look at more or less test drive any of the “big three” so while my first Prius wasn’t a statement of anything other than the bottom line the next might be (in part at least).

Truth be told the largest portion of $$$ used for conservation in the US comes from sportsmen (Hunters, fishermen, motor sports clubs, etc..) you would be amazed at how many are conservatives.

The propaganda would have you think that being conservative is anti conservation, that is far from the truth.....

You will find that most conservatives are already into conservation of all sorts not just environmental but they do it using proven technology while investing in new technology. what you won't find, is them holding protests or trying to cripple business with regulation to save a bug when the technology isn't viable yet.

Evolution can't be forced this is true with tech as well.

Wow. You are merely demonstrating the low math ability of the average user.

the point was the depreciation of the car doesn't factor into the fuel savings over time cost analysis. you MIGHT have a better resale value in 8-9 years, there is no guarantee that the car will be in top repair and condition or not have excess mileage.

but recovering the initial cost difference in 5 years between the Prius v and cars within it's class (size and cost), at the current gas prices, it should not take 5 years to null that difference. we save $72.00 per month vs. the fuel costs for a CR-V. the CR-V we looked at was $2,000.00 less in upfront cost.

at the current gas price, it will take 28 months to recover the additional cost of the Prius v over the CR-V. we plan to own the Prius v for at least 96 months. that means we should see roughly $4900.00 in fuel cost savings alone.

that is REAL savings, savings i can bank on*

*if the price of gas over the next 8 years averages $4.00/gallon. if it jumps to a $5/gallon average, i'll look so smart.

No. Just some politicians who block gas tax increases, alternative energy, fuel efficiency standards. I always vote against them.

The v is pretty easy to justify. There simply isn't another vehicle that offers the space, reliability, efficiency, low maintenance costs, and gadgets of the v. If they made a Camry hybrid wagon, I'd probably choose that sweet 2.5L hybrid drivetrain, but I require a wagon, so the v will do nicely.

BAH HUMBUG - dumba$$es do flock in groups.

I remember the first time I joined this group - and one favorite saying was........smile everytime you see these morons spending thousands extra on fuel - while we whisk by the gas stations, with the familiar regen whine, sounding like an airplane.

    I still remember this!

While i no longer own my prius - my CT does the same!

we took a day trip this weekend, my goodness the Prius v is roomy and easy to park in DC. had quite a few people asking us about it - even my sister, who drives a 2011 Ford Explorer, was interested.
