Did you consider a Jetta TDI before going Prius?

I was going to guess Superb. Guess we'll have to wait and see :)

Somewhat related information: The Octavia shares a platform and engines with the Jetta, while the Superb is related to the Passat.

You are right, it was a Skoda Superb (discontinued model), a sedan car very similar to the old Audi A6 (actually, they had the same engine, a V6 2,5 L TDI mounted in longitudinal position). Sorry for the late answer to the question.

Nice to see another european perspective on diesel cars. Notice again that diesel cars are not as cheap to run as you think. This poster also points out the down side of modern diesel ownership - injectors, particle filter problems, automatic gearboxes get trashed by the high torque and then the smog/soot issue under high acceleration.

I know there are some on here who try to sell the positives of diesel to the USA market and I do believe there are some (read some) positives but I think on balance there are more negatives compared to a hybrid.

FYI, I'm still waiting on a rainy day to quantify emergency brake performance for:

    • NHW11
    • ZVW30
However, I'll check the area around the VW dealership. It doesn't have the type of hill I want to use but there is a nice test area I might use that has low traffic. What I might do is bring along the accelerometer and have it running in the car.

So which TDIs should be brake tested:

    • Jetta TDI sedan
    • Jetta TDI wagon
    • Golf TDI
I don't want to waste half a day testing their inventory. Which one would a TDI enthusiast advocate testing?

Jetta sedan or Golf. The Jetta sedan dates back to before the Gen 2 Prius, but is much more popular than the Golf. The Golf is newer and better than the Jetta and probably the most comparable to the Gen 3. The Jetta Wagon is somewhere in between, but mechanically, it's probably closer to the Jetta.

We have rain forecast for Thursday. I'll use that day to compare emergency braking of an NHW11, ZVW30, and see if I can get a Golf TDI test drive scheduled. I think I know the hill to use too:

    Google Maps

    34 43' 33.72" N 86 38' 44.16" W headed east (Google Earth)

The speed limit is 45 mph and the hill descends from 203 m to 198 m in about 50-60 m. It is steep enough that with rain, it should pose an excellent ABS test. We'll shoot for say 1-2 PM when traffic should be fairly light. From there we'll scoot over to I-565, over to Research Blvd. and back so the sales critter can change his shorts.

Dry pavement, I tested the NHW20 today at:

    Google Maps

I didn't gather any metrics, just a 'dry run.' Boy that car stopped fast.

I like diesels and I like hybrids. I would consider another diesel and I would consider another hybrid. After the previous two, I would not consider another VW.

Your experience says a lot. You've also spent quite a bit of time at TDiClub.com as well.

I've had quite a few battles with VW Corporate, too. :D
