Just buy your wife a small bag of chips. Then clean out the mylar bag and have her keep it in a pocket of her purse. When driving in your car just have her pop her key in the pocket with the bag.

Yeah, I'm sure she we comply with that request. Half the time she forgets really important things that she needs when she changes purses. I guess we will have to have 15 bags of potato chips so she doesn't have to remove it from one purse to another.

It just seems to me that Toyota should come up with a solution to a problem that THEY are causing. Instead of referring me to the page number in the manual where they tell you interference can occur, they should be working on a solution to the problem, or at least provide the option to go back to a real key.

Take a good long test drive, not one of those 8 minute round the block drives the salespeople prefer! Make sure you and your wife are truly comfortable in it, everything is in reach, etc. Try a standard Prius too, for comparison, since the extra room may be worth considering. Some dealers throw tint on all their cars whether it's wanted or not, but remember the dealer usually charges more than an aftermarket shop does. Extended warranty, I'd pass, along with all the other crud the finance guy tries to sell!

tru, before you go in, just make sure you have a vision of what you want and what you're willing to pay.

salespeople have it down to a science to confound customers and get them on their heals, and swoop them up in a big flurry of excitement and desire to have it all now. reject all of this, keep it on your terms. they'll be observing you for "gotta have it" new car lust. they'll ask you where you work and for how long and all these things to find out who has the financial control of the deal, ie how much they can put the coals to you.

no matter how much you want the car you have got to appear as if you could take it or leave it. it doesn't matter to you if you get it at this dealer or another, today or next month. when you maintain control this way, they will be immensely more likely to approach your terms to make the sale. i say approach, because the c is still a hugely sellers market because of the low supply. if you go in like a starry eyed yes man, i guarantee you'll get the worst possible deal. just keep these things in mind, you're running it and you're not going to talked into anything you don't want. they're going to use psycology tricks on you in the heat of the negotiation and closure in finance dept. expect it, recognize it and reject it.

at the start of negotiations, when you switch from talking about the car, to about how much, ask them what their best price is on the car. they may say msrp or msrp minus a hunderd or two. your offer may be something like 1500 under msrp. he may laugh, he may look shocked. its all an act. he's seen it all before, does it 10 or more times a day, you do it once every 3-10 years. he's sharp, you have to be sharp. repeat your number. ask that he check with his sales manager about your offer for the car. he may not even go to the sales mgr, he may go over there and wait outside then come back and say the sales mgr is working on another deal right now, but is there any way you're willing to move on your offer before he goes back to take some of the precious sales mgr's time? no, this is the first place where you can't show weakness. look at your watch alot to show that you have other things to do and this is wasting your time. turn your chair when he goes to the mgr's office so you can see him go in and come out.

if he comes back with his original offer, they you say, i guess we have a problem here and just be quiet. if he says something let him talk, if its silent, just let it ride. eventually you'll get a chance to say, what is the best price you can give me on this car? and just shut up, let them talk their way into a better offer for you. if its down 3-5 hundred or whatever, it wasn't what you had in mind. you offer a couple hundred up from your initial offer. ask him to run your offer past his sales mgr. this cycle you can offer your value twice in a row, you're showing decelration on your adjustment. like this is hurting you and you're about to leave because of the developing unfavorable deal. you can keep this up as long as you and they are willing to stick it out. you may finish anywhere between 20% and 80% of the way between your initial offer and theirs. depends on market and office busy-ness. market is not in your favor on the c. i tend to think that its best to buy cars on the last couple days of the month at a time when the office is slow, you're clearly going to be a harder, less profitable sale than most others milling around in there, so if they can move on the easy pickins, they'll try to shoo you out. the end of the month is when they have to meet their quotas so they're more likely to accept unfavorable deals to do so, this works for you.

    good luck, young jedi

Great negotiation post Moezer. I actually enjoy the process. I took two of my sons to watch my last purchase. I think the most important parts of the negotiation process are to make sure the dealer is aware that you are not just shopping. If you get a deal you think is fair you will buy the car today, and if the dealer comes off his price by 200 dollars, you only add 200 to your next offer. If you always move up the same amount he moves down you will eventually work out a deal. The key is to make sure your original offer is low enough to leave this wiggle room.

edit: oh, and if you are trading in a car then go to carmax and at least see what kind of offer you can get. Carmax will offer you a wholesale value for your car. Don't let the new car dealer give you a good deal off the selling price, and then make it all up and then some on the trade-in.

Really? I don't have such issue with my PC. The smart system can be deactivated if you want to. I don't remember exactly (but I think you need to push and hold lock button and then push unlock button for 3 seconds to activate this feature or vice-versa) but you can find this info in the User's Manual.

Great run down on the negotiation process. I spent a year in Korea, where you never pay asking price. It's now a part of me. I even did it in a hardware store and got a deal on something that had a lot of dust on it. It obviously wasn't moving.

It's a tough thing to learn, but now everybody's doing it with all those junk-buyer shows on cable.

Found it. Toyota called it battery saving function:

    Electronic key battery-saving function.
When battery-saving mode is set, battery depletion is minimized by stopping the electronic key from receiving radio waves. Press twice "Unlock button" while pressing and holding "Lock button". Confirm that the electronic key indicator flashes 4 times. While the battery-saving mode is set, the smart key system cannot be used. To cancel the function, press any of the electronic key buttons.

That did not work. I did find a procedure that did work.
Power switch off, driver door closed and unlocked.
    (1) Push the unlock switch of the key once.
    (2) Open the driver door within 5 seconds.(3) Push the unlock switch of the key twice within 5 seconds.(4) Close and open the driver door twice within 30 seconds.
(Driver door: Close → Open → Close → Open)
    (5) Push the unlock switch of the key twice within 5 seconds.(6) Close and open the driver door within 30 seconds.
    (Driver door: Close → Open)
    (7) Close the driver door within 5 seconds.
When electrical key cancel is activated, the wireless door lock buzzer sounds twice.
To return to the original condition, perform the procedure again. When the original condition is returned, the wireless door lock buzzer sounds once.

While it turned off the sks, now I can't start the car at all with anything. Now I need to find a way to reactivate the sucker.

edit: just do the same thing all over again.

I'm a pretty big guy myself at about 6' and 260lbs. I do have to put the seat down on the floor, and adjust the way I get into the car from the way I used to get into my truck, to make entering the vehicle NOT a headbanging experience. I have the C2 and the driver's seat is 6 way adjustable though not a power seat. I've been on a 400 mile roundtrip so far and have found the Prius to be surprisingly comfortable. (I've only had the car a week.) This is the first car I've ever owned that I loved immediately after taking delivery...
As to the tint the dealer installed it on mine. 50 state legal tint...And clear door edge strips etc. to protect the paint.
