Ok back from my 20 thousand mile maintance visit. I asked the service writer the cost of replacing my trans fluid which i probably will have done at 30 thousand miles. Her answer was Toyota says to change at 100 thousand miles. I again asked about the cost. Her answer was i don't know. I was thinking maybe i should go across the street and ask the Chevrolet service department? then after oil and filter change and rotation of tires she finds me in the waiting area and proceeds to tell me my tires are at 6/32 and 5/32 and will need replacing soon. I keep them at 40 psi front and 38 rear since day one. Before leaving i told her tires when replaced down the road would not be the original junk that came on the car and have you figured out the cost of the trans fluid replacement ? She still said world fluid does not need replacing prior to 100 thousand miles and it would be around $ 125.00 or so and i should replace the tires with original equipment. I went home and took an asprin. I hope other Prius owners have a better time at the dealership.

OEM tires rarely have great tread life. In fact, that's the first thing car manufacturers sacrifice for other attributes such as ride comfort, etc. when they mass order a particular tire for a vehicle. They're usually junk for the customers as a result.

Regardless of where you get the trans fluid replaced, use the Toyota stuff and don't let the Chevrolet people put in just any fluid.

$125 is a fairly reasonable price, what made you get so worked up?

The dealer was probably not familiar with the cost of the fluid change since few Gen IIIs have had it done at this point.

The worked up part was she was at her desk, at the computer. They we not buisy and had 5 other service people nearby. I guess looking on the computer or asking someone else was too much trouble. I also asked if she had ever seen test results of world fluid removed from transmissions ,at different mileage intervals. Then she wanted to know why someone would do that and that they don't test anything removed from a vehicle. The Chevrolet comment was sarcasm because toyota did not know what the price was. I guess maybe i was really spoiled by my honda dealership, they always gave me a price when asked in person or on the phone, for anything i requested. That price was always the amount they charged and they never pushed extras at the time of service.

My prius is my 12th new car and on all those vehicles the tires that came oem lasted 35 to 40 thousand miles, but they were also not Bridgestone,

I am proud of 'my' service department for just such behavior, They come out and say 'we are supposed to change air filters every 30,000 miles but yours look new, we will check agian in 5,000 miles.' and the service writer said 'you do not need a transaxle fluid change yet' and I said 'but I want one.' Later the mechanic came out and said ' she has me doing a tranaxle fluid change but none is scheduled.' and I said 'I asked for it.' (mine was $109 on a Gen 2) The mechanic DID come back out and say it WAS dirty.

You may wish to be happy that your service department is concerned about unneeded repairs, even though in this limited example, they are wrong about it being unneeded.

The type of car you purchase and the trim level have a lot to do with the OE tires installed -- If you buy a basic sedan from any make they are trying to hit a certain price point and often the tires are made for the certain OE market.

Most people don't even do the maintenance that is recommended -- let alone do extra and have the oil analyzed.

I worked with someone once who leased his vehicles -- and he never even changed the oil -- just added it ....... I only found this out because someone else in the office bought the very same vehicle from the dealers CPO lot !

After researching replacement tires for my 2007 Touring Prius, I ordered Bridgestone ECOPIA tires. The ECOPIA are low-rolling-resistantce tires designed for hybrid and electric cars. We noticed an immediate 3 to 4 MPG increase in fuel economy, even before the moulding tits were worn off the new tires. As some highway speeds there's a little 'singing' road sound depending on the type of pavement. Now have about 4,000 miles and they look as new.
