I'd check everything to see that you've minimised that chance.

sorry to hear that they gave it the kiss of death, that sucks. So if they kill it you should have a courtesy car free right? Now's the time to force them to loan you a Yaris
4 day's! they had the wife's the next morning. From Toronto.

We tried. They said they had none and that they'll put us on a waiting list for the next available courtesy car. I've already test driven the Yaris twice - LE Pkg "B" and RS (base), both 5-drs. It's a nice little car.

I have no idea where they're getting the ECU. Just hope they don't use it as a demo car seeing that Priuses are hard to come by.

Just got my "recall" notice in the mail. We have until December 2008 to have this work done. From the experiences here, it sounds like I should wait a while to make sure that the tech has done a few before letting him get his ECU-destroyin' hands on my car? I don't think there are too many Prii in the Windsor area, so I don't know how much "practice" the tech will get. Don't know how long I should wait. Any comments?

Does anyone else, specifically any Canadian driver, have any other comments on this "service"? Any other horror stories, or success stories?

That'll be a very good idea to wait. I already had this update done and

    a) They fried my ECU
b ) broke my battery compartment cover trying to charge the 12V battery when it died
    c) left my dashboard partially fixed (gap btwn radio and screen, gap btwn upper glovebox and dash, loose kick panel on passenger side, A-pillar trim not put back properly)
    d) broke the red plastic positive terminal cover

yup I'd wait till about mid to late 2006 to have it done and if the car didn't stall between now and then I'd problaby wait a little longer say fall 2007. By then there'll probably be at least another update and you can see how the tech's are coping with that one. Killed the HV ECU on the wifes car when it was the old SSC-40-D (what ever they called it in Canada) campaign. I told her not to be to concerened about this one as well as the car is working fine. Hope she doesn't get it flashed. Time will tell though. I will admit that this time Toyota didn't take 5 months to bring out the update.

    Canada SOSH-516-1A

    Tideland and Frank-

Thanks for the input. Sounds like solid advice to me. Now I just have to convince the wife that it's safe to drive.

Is it true that when this particular error happens you can still pull over to the side of the road and "reboot" by powering down and powering up? I thought someone said on this board if you power up with foot off the brake (which should send you into ACC mode) that will clear the error. Presumably if you go back to "READY" you should be okay to drive off again. Any comments?

It says on your recall notice what you can do to get around the problem.

I just got that same letter. So it's about 2 weeks since my technician knew about it.

As for the problem, I'm not sure. All the reports have been the in states.

no work around on the Canadian notice. Just say's bring it in. I doubt that anybody at Toyota Canada would know there is a work around.

    From user notice:

    What is the problem?
In recent months, Toyota has received reports that some customers may experience a “stalling†condition with the
gasoline engine. We sincerely regret and apologize if you are one of these customers.
Toyota has investigated these concerns and discovered an issue with the program logic in the Electronic Control
Module (ECM) System. In this case, the warning lights (Master Warning, Hybrid System Warning, Engine Warning,
VSC Warning and/or Brake Warning) will illuminate and the vehicle will enter a “fail-safe†mode which allows limited
operation via the electric motor. However, the electrically-powered brake and steering operation will continue to
function normally if this condition occurs.
If these Warning Lights illuminate, please stop your vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact your Toyota
dealer. Even if the hybrid system warning light comes on, in most cases, you can temporarily increase the vehicle
speed by depressing the accelerator pedal. If the vehicle completely stops, you may be able to restart your vehicle
by depressing the “Start†button. In some instances, it may be necessary to wait approximately 25 seconds before
    restarting.

    From Dealer notice:
... The electric motor will also provide enough power to allow the driver to pull the vehicle over and away from traffic. Once the vehicle is stopped, the driver may be able to restart the gasoline engine in the vehicle by pushing the start button.

I also read somewhere, in an official notice I thought, that you might need to try restarting a few times.

must be nice all we got is Problem: certian 2004-5 Prius might have a "stalling" problem. There was a bit more to that part of the Problem but the whole thing is
    4 lines long.
Toyota Canada sure doesn't go out of it's way to provide any information to the owner.
