    Some local news indicated that entering addresses (by hand, not by voice) into a GPS unit technically falls under our state's texting-while-driving law. The story suggested that built-in units were OK. Fiddling with separate units while moving was not really legal, but this was generally not enforced for units firmly attached to the car (e.g. windshield mounts). But holding it in one's hand would draw the same attention as texting.

    If you are Toyota's attorney, are you certain they won't lose a multi-million lawsuit when a distracted driver plows into a school bus? They aren't thinking just from the perspective of legality, but also of liability. They have to do what they feel is safest for their customers and also what protects them from liability.

    Even our portable Garmin and TomTom units warn you before you disable the speed lock. But at least they have the option.
