I hade to take a little 70 mile jaunt today on a sparsely-travelled road. When I left there was a slight western breeze about 8 miles an hour. Temperature was 88 degrees. The road was flat as a pancake.

The first 18 miles I averaged 74.8 mpg with 51mph average This was definitely a high for my car for that many miles. I was dreaming of having my first 60 mpg tank. (I already had 250 miles on the tank at 55.7.

Then the wind picked up. It was a cross wind for the next 18 miles. By the time I got to my destination I was still showing 64 mpg after 36 miles.

Of course that meant I would have 18 miles of cross winds again, and this time 18 miles of headwinds on the way home.

Needless to say by the time I got home I was under 58mpg for the short trip, and only 56.2 displayed after about 320 miles. I never in my life would have ever thought I would be sad about 56.2 mpg. This is what a Prius does to you!!

I agree. I filled up for the third time last week and driving back to work I only got 34mpg when previous to that I had been getting a consistent 48-52! Bummer! But since then, while monitoring my P&G, I can again score 52 and above. I hit 56.8 tonight.

    I guess I am getting spoiled ;)

I filled up on my way to work (about 2 miles from my house). When I rolled into the parking lot, my MPG was reading 77.7 mpg (I couldn't tease 80 mpg out of it) for ~32 miles or so. After work, I had to drive 10 minutes, park, get my hair cut (hour goes by), drive to my parent's house (15 minute drive) park, visit (2 hours go by) and then drive home in the higher winds. I rolled into my house at 66.4 mpg.

I hate winds. I hate short trips. I'm definitely spoiled.

I think it's called "Prius Mileage Plateau Syndrome" affecting all owner's of new Prius when their mpg plateaus. Only known cure is a new, higher mileage Prius, typically requiring new vehicle every 3 years.

During the winter here in the Northwest with temps in the mid 30's
to mid 40's nearly everday with heavy rain and standing water
on the roadways our mpg's drops down to about 46-48 mpg
    calculated with our Prius.

I am somewhat uncomforted by being below the magic 50 mpg
figure. Possibly because in the summer mpg's are always in the
50 mpg range sometimes near 60 mpg.

Even though I know there are millions of drivers out there that would be
glad to get 30 mpg and would be doing the moon dance if they did.

I guess once you know something is possible you want to make it a normal occurrence. I live about 5 miles from a ferry. The other day I zeroed out my trip odometer about a mile after I got off the ferry just to see what I could get for that stretch. I made it to 82.1. My Prius has never seen numbers like that on anything more than about 2 miles.

Yes, but that is displayed mileage. That will only yield 51-53 calculated so the pain is even worse.

Every day I have to make a decision whether to take the HOV or another hwy. If it's really early I take the other hwy, because if I took the HOV that early there would be cars up my you know what wanting to do 70 mph and I would get much lower MPGs. So I take the other hwy which will get me better MPGs and about 5 minutes more commuting time, which doesn't bother me.

If I take off later, I usually take the HOV lane because I know it will be somewhat slower so that I can improve my MPGs and not be affected by traffic as much. So it's a win-win situation.

Also, going home I will sometimes take the other hwy, because I can get about 10-12% better mileage, because it's flatter and easier to draft other vehicles. In the HOV lane you are stuck with pot luck as far as who is in front of you, so it's more difficult to draft.

Note: I'm not talking NASCAR drafting ... I'm about 1-1.25 seconds behind and at rush hour, people do cut in between.

My best short trip was back from the gas station which was 2.4 miles and 99.9 mpg.
