    Hi Guys,

Thanks for taking the time to read through my post. I have been a member since 2007 but do not post regularly and this have since forgotten my username and password :-( I have created a new account and hopefully be a more active member. Thanks in advanced for any help.

Our Prius is a second generation from 2006. Over the weekend the right front hub bearing was replaced (by Pep Boys). This was their diagnosis after we reported hearing "humming" noise from the front side of the car. They did a test drive around the block and they said that this was the problem. True enough, the noise went away after they have done the procedure. Unfortunaltely, the ! ABS VSC lights are now constantly on. I noticed this when I drove the car going home (about a mile away). I quickly did my research here in Priuschat and read about the reset procedure by jumper pins 4 and 13 on the DLC together with pumping the brake pedals as described in the posts.

This immediately solved the problem with the lights. They were off now and everything was back to normal. I then did a test drive, and lo and behold, when I hit on the brakes, no matter how soft, the car jerks as if the ABS was engaging. This happened twice before the ! ABS and VSC lights again went off. As soon as the error lights went back on, braking became normal once more - no more jerky and intermittent braking.

I then drove home and did the jumper procedure again to make sure that the first attempt wasn't just a fluke. I had the same experience as before - car braking became intermittent and jerky. The ! ABS and VSC lights again turned on - and right after, braking became normal.

I know its too late now but I have to bring it back to Pep Boys. I should have taken this into a dealership. I had to take the car to work today but will be bringing it in tomorrow. Hoping someone can give us some advice on what to do next or what to tell the technician. Thanks again.

It sounds to me like they either forgot to plug the wheel speed sensor back in or broke one of the wires while doing the wheel bearing/hub replacement. It is easy to forget. I would remove the tire and check to see if the sensor is plugged in or the wiring is damaged.

    Let us know the outcome.

Pep Boys says that the ABS sensor needs to be replaced. They said that since they replaced the hub bearing, they also have to replace the sensor. Reading this forum a lot leads me to believe that they don't have a clue to what's going on.

Unfortunately, another problem came up - the dashboard brake light is now also on even if the foot parking break is released. I don't know if its psychological or what but I do feel that the car is sluggish. I don't know whats going on anymore. This car was super reliable before this mess. Ditched Pep Boys and have dropped it at the dealership. Will post updates when I get them.

This is why I do my own maintenance. If I break it, I learn something and, I know what's broke. I can only blame myself then.

I replaced my hub and encountered no difficulties like this. If I recall correctly, the hub I bought came with a sensor on it. It def sounds like they have no clue. That's too bad. Hopefully the dealer will fix it. Get your wallet ready!!!!

Thanks so much for the encouragement. Unfortunately I don't have time nor the tools to tinker. The dealer says that the 1 - dust cap was inserted the wrong way and 2 - there was a loose bolt that virtually damaged the hub. I don't have the exact number but the bottom line is - they have to redo everything. This is such a heartache. Savings will now go to this repair.

After your car is repaired, I suggest you take the Toyota dealer invoice to Pep Boys and ask them to reimburse you since their mechanic's incompetence required the dealer service dept intervention. Photos of the botched work might help.
