Is it possible to duplicate the mechanical "laser key" on my 2012 PlugIn Prius? I don't need a key that fits into the fob. I want to have an extra key in case I loose the fob? Yes, I know that the mechanical key will not start the car, only give me access.

Is there a mail service that can duplicate a key from an existing cut key?

I live in a rural community in Colorado that doesn't have a locksmith that can cut a laser key.

Your dealership in Colorado can duplicate the laser key using the laser key# on the car's invoice.

Is your Pip a base or Advanced model?
If it's advanced, the Safety Connect 'On-star' folks can unlock your car.

If you don't have a problem sending a key by mail, PM me. I can (and have done so for other PC members) duplicate your key for way less than anyone else.

Safe trips,

How much is way less? I think I paid about $250 for my 07 Prius.

That price sounds like it is for a new OEM fob. The OP is referring to the emergency key.

2nd gen emergency keys can be cut anywhere - nothing special. The 3rd gen keys are laser-cut high security keys, also called 4 channel internal-cut sidewinder keys.

3rd Gen requires a special cutter (think milling machine). The dealer charged me over $100 for one - hence my decision to acquire the equipment. Depending on particulars, I can generally do it for about one-third the cost, sometimes less.

See this thread for the background, if you're curious: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-technical-discussion/103614-laser-cut-key-cutter-options.html

I cannot for the life of me locate a telephone number for Safety connect. If I am not inside my vehicle to hit the SoS button, how could I get them to unlock the car?

There is a "Roadside assistance" number on the "ToyotaCare" envelope I received yesterday:

(800) 444-4195

It's on a wallet card they supply, as well as 2 detachable keyfob cards that can be placed with the smartkey(s)

I called the quoted number. The agent advised me that they couldn't remotely unlock my car. She then referred me to Toyota Telematics. Same result.

Either their agents are poorly trained (my suspicion) or their isn't the facility to remotely unlock the vehicle.

Both agents offered to send someone out to manually unlock the car. As I travel in remote areas this could take several hours or possibly days. Not an acceptable solution.

There is a number in the Owners Manual (page 416, (800) 255-3987) which one can call to subscribe to 'Telematics' I called the number I was connected to a Lexis service that new nothing re Toyota.

I glad I checked this facility out as wouldn't wan't to be stranded and have to play this game.

Safety Connect doesn't remotely lock or unlock your car.
Safety Connect does this:

Drivers can push this in-vehicle button in the event of emergency for 24/7 response center assistance. Agents can dispatch the necessary emergency services to the vehicle’s location in case of a medical or other emergency on the road.

The 24/7 Safety Connect response center is available for roadside assistance via the SOS button. Drivers can receive aid for a wide range of needs, such as towing, jump start, flat tire, and fuel delivery. Safety Connect helps alleviate the need for additional membership organizations for roadside help.

Automatic Collision Notification
In case of an airbag deployment or a severe rear-end collision, the 24/7 response center will automatically be notified. The response center agent will attempt to speak with the vehicle’s occupants and will request dispatch of emergency services to the vehicle’s location.

Stolen Vehicle Location
An enhancement to the many security measures in the vehicle that are designed to deter theft, Safety Connect helps provide increased vehicle security and makes vehicles less desirable to thieves. In the event that an enrolled vehicle is stolen, once a police report is filed and the 24/7 response center is notified by the vehicle’s owner, response center agents can assist the authorities in locating the vehicle. That means the vehicle is more likely to be recovered quickly, which may help minimize damage.

The proper # to call is 800-331-4331
and the promopts get you to help quick via te phone.
The SOS button IN the car is for help with emergency when you're in it.
Once again - your car cannot be locked or unlocked remotely. It's not on-star.

So you can turn on the air conditioning remotely, but you cannot unlock the car....

I guess the feeling is that unlocking the car if you don't have the key isn't going to accomplish much. I would expect keys-locked-in-car to be the common scenario that OnStar was thinking of. Can you even lock the Plug-In with the key inside the car? I know it fusses if it detects a key in the car when you attempt to lock it with another key. Perhaps the software associated with smart key in the Plug-In simply does not allow the key-locked-in car scenario to happen. The only scenario I can think of is if a parent leaves a child and the keys in an unlocked car, and the kid hits the lock button on the door (not the key). But at least you can remotely turn on the A/C to keep the kid cool until you get aid. :)

Edit: I just verified that if the key is in the car, and you open the door and hit the lock button on the door, and shut the door, that the headlights flash, it beeps, displays the "key detected" message, and does not lock the car. That pretty much leaves the person-in-car-locks-car-from-inside as the only scenario I can think of where remote unlock would be useful.

My concern is that if I loose a key fob and the second key fob is a long way off I'm screwed. It could potentially cost time and money to get back on the road. So far I'm not thrilled with the 'SOS' service. They advised me that they could send a towing service to get into vehicle. I don't think the towing service would be able to start the vehicle without the fob.

Here's what I'm doing:

1. Having a duplicate mechanical 'laser' key produced and hiding it in a 'Hide a Key' on the exterior of the vehicle,
2. Remove the battery from the 2nd key fob and hide it somewhere inside the vehicle.

It is possible to start the vehicle with a fob with the battery removed by placing the battery-less fob next to the 'Power' button, press the break pedal and then the 'Power' button.

Any other recommendations are welcome and appreciated.

I just receive two mechanical 'laser keys' made for me by 'h00ktern', a member of Prius chat. The keys work perfectly. They are identical in appearance to the original. The cost was very, very modest and the turn around time less then a week.

I have heard on PriusChat that some dealers have quoted/charged $ 100 to duplicate the mechanical/laser key. No need to get ripped off by a dealer when we have a resource like 'h00ktern' (the middle two 'ohs' are numbric'
