I called my salesman to let him know I would be coming in tonight to put down a $100 refundable deposit. My salesguy said something about having the contract ready. I didn't know I had to sign a contract at this point. I'm just putting down a deposit??? Or is that all I'm doing?? He said it was just a contract for them to get me a car and that if I don't want it later on then that's fine. Help! Tracy

PS Yes I'm female and not good at all with this car buying stuff :( So please be nice to me. (I did buy one new car before for my daughter and had no problems. Handed then the money and was in and out within about 1/2 hour)

Some dealers do have you sign a "Purchase Agreement". That just says they will find the Prius/Package you want. Make sure it is in "writting" that the deposit is refundable if you A)Decide not to take the car B)Just change your mind C)Find a Prius somewhere else. As long as it is written that the deposit is refundable, you are ok.

Ok so it's really just a purchase agreement that can be canceled at anytime before I take posseion of the car right? (That's how it was explained to me. He just threw me off when he mentioned the word contract)

He already knows before I hand over my deposit I want it in writing that it is refundable for ANY reason!

I'm on lists with 2 dealers - each time I completed a 'preference sheet' stating what the deposit was for with my package and color choices etc. I concur about making sure about the no-hassle refundability.

Ok a prefernce sheet wouldn't have thrown me off as the word contract.

    Heading in!

Edited to add: When and if I do buy this car can I completely stay away from the finance office except to give them my money? That's how it went down with buying my daughters car. I don't need anything besides the car so I'm not interested in listening to the financial person trying to sell me everything and anything he can. It will ONLY be wasting his time and mine!

Please don't sign anything ever without reading all of it and making sure you understand it. If it is written in such a way that you can't understand then don't sign it. If there is something in it you don't like don't sign it. Remember the deposit only protects the dealer. The only good thing is that it is only $100 but make sure they can't use the contract to get more out of you later if you change your mind about the car.

Well hopefully it will be a simple purchase agreement. I'm not a laywer or would want to be a laywer. I just work hard for my money and don't hand it over to just anyone.

Read the contract. Every dealer is free to sell his cars the way he likes. When I put down my $500 deposit all I got was a receipt for the amount. But he was the only dealer in town, I didn't want to go elsewhere, and I KNEW I wanted this car.

A dealer can make a deposit non-refundable, but I've never heard of one doing that except from Windstrings, who often has unusual things to say.

Standard advice: Read the contract. Don't let him rush you. If there's anything you don't like, you can ask for it to be changed. But the chances are it'll be fine, as long as the deposit is refundable without any conditions. And besides, if you really want this car, a $100 deposit is nothing. (Unless that was a typo.)

Ok hopefully the contract will be pretty simple and easy to understand. It's not like I'm dealing with some fly by night company. I was thinking the same thing would happen like your said happened to you I would just give them the $100 after they give me something in writing that it's refundable for any reason. I would then get a receipt for $100 and be on my way.

Actually, I decided not to order a Prius JUST yet. I'm hoping I can just find one without having to order one. I will wait and see a bit.

probably not. i paid cash for my Prius and had to listen to the sales pitch anyway... if you force the issue, they might back off but my sales team (yes they gang up on you) also used the opportunity to introduce me to the service dept manager and explain my warantee besides the other "stuff" (they are serious about this as meeting the service dept lady (in my case) is part of the CSTS (customer service transactional survey) which is what nosy busy bodies like JD Powers uses to rate the dealerships

Dang, So why was it SO fast and easy when I bought my daughters car. The only thing I did was hand the financial person my money and I was out of their with a brochere on the warranty.

At $30,000 I'm not going to be able to afford to buy anything extra they try selling me.

hmm. i guess we did get special treatment since DH works for the dealer. we walked into the finance office to sign the loan contracts and go over the invoice, and the finance manager didn't say word one about anything else.

course, they probably wanted DH to get himself back to work!
