Just got this email from Toyota...

    Dear Toyota Owner,

Thank you for your recent purchase of a new 2012 Toyota. We hope you are enjoying all of the great features and functions in your new vehicle, especially Toyota's revolutionary new multimedia system– Entune®!

We are very pleased to announce that in the coming weeks, you will be receiving an upgrade for your Entune system. This upgrade will be delivered at no cost to you and will provide three new applications for your Entune equipped vehicle: iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com™ and OpenTable®. In addition, the upgrade will add voice recognition capability for all of your Entune apps, making the use of Entune easier than ever!

This Entune upgrade will be delivered to you via US Mail on a USB memory stick (flash drive.) In case you are not familiar with these devices, a USB memory stick is a computer memory device that will be preloaded with the Entune software. You will need to follow the simple instructions that will be included with the package to complete the upgrade and the entire process should take around five minutes.

The USB memory stick will be arriving in your mailbox in the next few weeks. It will be in an envelope that is clearly labeled "Your Entune Update is Enclosed". Please be on the lookout for it and be careful not to discard it as junk mail.

The Entune upgrade will also be delivered to your smartphone app. You may see the new applications on your smartphone before you receive the USB memory stick in the mail. Please be aware that the new apps will not work until you have installed the upgrade from the memory stick into your vehicle's multimedia system using your Toyota's USB port.

Thank you again for your purchase and we hope you enjoy the new capabilities of your upgraded Entune system.

    Sincerely,

    Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A, Inc.

    Better late than never.
I'm surprised they are taking on the cost of sending a flash drive to owners, rather than having us go to the dealer.
Hope this applies to all V owners with Entune, and not just those with the V Five.

I have a V5 with ATP and got a slightly different message:
"...This upgrade will enable voice recognition for Pandora®, iHeartRadio, OpenTable® andMovieTickets.com™ apps. This upgrade will be delivered to your vehicle "over the air", so all you will need to do is click "OK" on your navigation/audio screen when your vehicle prompts you to accept the Entune upgrade..."

I think they might have sent out different notices to various package owners. I got the one that said the update would be "over the air".

Just went out to the car to try it, but I guess it isn't ready for over the air yet.

Probably a difference with the AT package.

I just finished the update after several attempts. It would fail part way through and then sometimes have the usual bluetooth connection problem. Finally it picked up the download where it left off and finished the update.

However, when I try to issue a voice command to Pandora, like Create <Artist> Playlist, it tells me I need to configure the app. I have no idea where to do this configuration though and see no relevant settings in either the iPhone nor Entune app. Time for some research I guess.

Interesting AT over the air, non AT via USB.

Also surprised we didn't have to go to dealer...after the last bug fix required a dealer upgrade.

I called Toyota about this and did some testing while on the phone with a very helpful support person. Turns out that each app was updated with some minor voice commands that are accessed through a microphone button in the app, not via the voice button on the steering wheel. She did not know why the Pandora command was not working and promised to have a technical support person call me. I'll report back here if I learn anything interesting.

You spoke with someone who knew something about Entune at Toyota! Not my experience...

I got the first OTA update on Tuesday, then another on Thursday, and a third one today Saturday. The first two broke Apps to the point where they were unusable. Today's update is looking much better. (But that's what I thought on Thursday too, for an hour or so.)

I'm still a bit confused about BT alone versus USB plus BT with the Premium HDD system. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I sometimes get a nice iPod connection (it's actually my iPhone 4s via USB), and other times I can only get the BT media player. Same functionality, but the USB connection sounds better. However, since the second update, I cannot get sound out of Pandora or iHeart Radio if the USB cable is connected. Or at least, I cannot get sound consistently.

Some posters say that entune can be backgrounded on your iPhone once the connection to the car is established. I think that sorta works, but you cannot change apps without bringing it back to foreground. I ended up with both Pandora and iHeart playing simultaneously a few minutes ago by trying to change from Pandora to iHeart with entune backgrounded, then bringing it to the foreground when the switch failed and then tapping iHeart. Not very listenable.

What version of Entune are you running PriusV5AT? You can check by touching Toyota icon upper left of main Entune App screen. I have been checking twice a day for the Entune update, but nothing so far for me here in Central New York.

Now I have Entune version 1.2.156183 after a 2 minute upgrade using my iPad 2 on wifi. It does not look like I'm gaining much. A microphone icon on the apps. I used the microphone (voice recognition) button on the Bing app before the upgrade to find a doctors office. Maybe the bing app voice recognition is more powerful now? Adding voice commands to the other apps is not going to get much use from me.

Here is a link to explain the untune upgrade from Toyota :

It's at version 1.2.156183. I now know that to keep Entune working, you MUST AVOID the USB cable connection.

Entune does work on iPhone iOS 5.1.1 with the Premium HDD only if you do not plug in USB. If you do that, you get better iPod functionality. But on the next use (e.g., park, shop, then return and try to re-connect), chances are it will fail completely. When this does happen, you will probably get a message on the head unit saying that there must be an application running… Don't give up, you can clear up the problem by performing a soft reset of your iPhone (hold down the “home menu” button and the “power” button for about 10-15 seconds. Agreed this is not nice, but it's better than what I went through for a week before I knew the trick to success.

Additionally, I'm finding that Entune does not have to be in the foreground on the phone for successful operation. I first start Entune on the phone, then start the car. Info->Apps then works fine. I can park, use other apps on the phone, return and restart the car without bringing Entune back to the foreground, and everything still works. Just stay clear of USB connections.

At least for the ATP version, there is a setting in the Pandora section of the Entune iPhone app to enable higher quality audio. This seems to work well, although it gets randomly reset to "off" and so needs to be checked periodically.

I agree, at least with respect to my 2012 Gen III with ATP. I finally had the notice for the upgrade come through this morning. Took less than a minute and a half over wifi (cable internet) via iPad and BT connection to car. Only fiddled with Pandora afterwards --- kind of limited functionality with the voice commands. Even so, this isn't integrated with the NAV system where you can use the regular voice command button. Instead, you hit an icon on the Pandora app on the NAV screen. Not the best of integrations, IMO. :(

The above contradicts the statement of then Entune update web page:
"With the update, all Entune apps will be accessible via voice recognition, so you can also show restaurants, ask Bing™ for any POI, find movies, and listen to whatever you like just by asking the system. All this while keeping your eyes on the road and your attention on what's ahead."

I underlined the statement that I think is total baloney. You actually HAVE to take your eyes off the road to find the voice command icon, and then again to do anything with the Bing search results.

Entune App in iTunes is showing the latest release as v1.5.173, last updated on April 26, 2012. Perhaps there will be additional functionality when the Entune App is updated.

I take it that you were able to get the new Pandora voice commands (limited though they may be) to create a new station. When I try this, it gives an error about the need to configure the application, although it does not say which application to configure. Since all other Pandora functions work fine, I'm configured as much as I know how. Voice commands in other Entunes apps seem to work fine.

Did you have to do anything special to get it to work?

    Thanks.

    Dave -

Well, yes and no. I did not need to configure any application --- I just hit the microphone icon. I can get the voice command to work but every single station I tried to create (I tried to create 5) resulted in a screen which asked me to select from many options of what it thought I wanted. The screen is something like "Did you mean?" and then the list. Can you use voice to select from the list? Nope. You've got to touch the NAV screen to select the correct one.

With only two options (Create <Artist> station; Create <Title> station) I won't even bother with this for now. My sound bite for the experience: The software engineer(s) that came up with this poor level of functionality should be fired.

I agree completely! And so should the lawyers that created such a dangerous situation by randomly disabling easy button pushes and replacing them with confusing, distracting voice commands that suck away your attention trying in vain to work around the normal button operations.

I received the USB stick in the mail, tried to install the update per enclosed instructions. It seemed to download for awhile and then give an error message telling me to remove the USB stick and reinsert. After about 5 repetitions of this, I gave up. Has anyone else run into this situation?
